We have the pleasure of inviting you to an international
conference organized within the framework of the European
FP6 SHUR project (www.luiss.it/shur) by the Center for
Ethics and Global Politics of LUISS University.

Shur’s final conference will focus on "Human rights in
conflict — the role of civil society" and will take place on
4-6 June 2009 at LUISS University, Rome-Italy.

The prime objective of the conference is to analyse the
following topics in an open debate with scholars and
activists adopting different approaches and perspectives:

- The link between human rights and conflicts.
- The role of civil society in the prevention/generation,
  amelioration/worsening and resolution/continuation of
conflicts through its focus on human rights.
- Strategies to make civil society actions more effective in
human rights protection in contexts of fragmented
  multi-ethnic political communities.
- Strategies to improve the complementarity between the
actions and strategies pursued by governmental and
  non-governmental actors in conflict situations.
- Strategies to improve the impact of civil society actors
in reducing human rights violations through greater
synergies with the official European level.

We expect to attract a relevant number of participants and
to create a space for discussion that will improve the
understanding of these dynamics.

Scholars and researchers in political and social theory,
political science, international relations, socio-legal
studies, area studies, media studies and human rights
studies will present papers falling in one of following
panels:

1. Conflict transformation and civil society engagement
2. Human rights in ethno-religious conflicts
3. Identity in conflict: concepts of nation, ethnicity and
   practices in conflict
4. Gender issues in conflict: what role for civil society?
5. The EU-civil society relations in conflict zones

The conference will be held in English.
