Call for Applications One-year Postgraduate Specialization Course in Cultural Sciences Scuola Internazionale di Alti Studi "Scienze della cultura", Fondazione Collegio San Carlo Modena (Italy) __________________________________________________ art. 1 Number of places and School characteristics The Scuola Internazionale di Alti Studi «Scienze della cultura» della Fondazione Collegio San Carlo in Modena (Italy) invites applications for five places on a postgraduate specialization course in Cultural Sciences. Selection will take place on the basis of academic qualifications. The School is residential and it aims to provide high-level training in Cultural Sciences following an interdisciplinary research program (Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, Religious Sciences) and awards a Postgraduate Certificate in Cultural Sciences. Compulsory didactic activity takes place in the semester February-June 2010 and entails the attendance of interdisciplinary high formation seminars for a total 250 hours, held in Italian, French and English by teachers of renowned international standing. An intensive course of Italian is provided. The Postgraduate Certificate will be awarded subject to the successful completion of all the course work and having passed an end of course assessment. Such an end of course assessment will be based on subjects dealt with in the seminars. The Scientific Committee of the School comprises Professors: Dario Antiseri (Università LUISS di Roma), Arnold I. Davidson (University of Chicago), Elio Franzini (Università di Milano), Wolfgang Reinhard (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg), Pierangelo Sequeri (Facoltà Teologica dell'Italia Settentrionale, Milano). art. 2 Requirements for admission The selection is open to Italian and non-Italian citizens below the age of thirty-one who, by the application deadline, hold a degree qualification, or an equivalent qualification by the terms of the law in force, in Philosophy, Social and Human Sciences or Religious Sciences. art. 3 Application and deadline Application for the selection procedure must be addressed to the Scientific Director of the School by a registered letter with advice of receipt. The postmark deadline is 30 September 2009. Applicants, who will be held responsible for any false declarations, must declare: a) first name, surname, date and place of birth; b) nationality; c) not to have had penal convictions; d) to be immune from illnesses incompatible with living in a community; e) permanent address; f) address to which all correspondence should be sent. The application is not incompatible with an application for one of the five places for a three-year Ph.D offered by the same Scuola Internazionale di Alti Studi «Scienze della cultura» for the academic year 2009-2010. In the event of an application being submitted for both competitions, applicants are allowed to forward only one copy of the documents mentioned in art. 4. art. 4 Enclosed documents Applicants should enclose the following documents: 1) curriculum vitae outlining studies to date; 2) a copy of the applicant's degree certificate specifying (where available) the single marks for each exam, the date and the mark of the final exam. This certification can be replaced by a simple declaration signed by the applicant specifying the aforesaid information. Foreign students are to submit a certificate proving that their degree is legally the equal of an Italian Laurea magistrale (second-cycle degree), or forward an undersigned declaration to the same effect; 3) a copy of the degree final dissertation; 4) every other scientific title or qualification relevant to the selection procedure; 5) a signed declaration of the applicant's knowledge of French and English, and of his/her comprehension of Italian; 6) two letters of reference to the School written by academic referees in subjects relevant to the course, expounding the applicant's scientific profile. Applicants may reclaim the submitted documents on payment of the postal charges not later than 31.3.2010. Thereafter the School disclaims any responsibility for their preservation. art. 5 Adjudicating Committee and admission procedure The Adjudicating Committee comprises the School's Scientific Committee and the Scientific Director. A list of successful candidates and a list of suitably qualified candidates will be publicly posted on the School Board and on the web page <http://www.fondazionesancarlo.it/fsc/Viewer?cmd=default> www.fondazionesancarlo.it. Both lists will be expressed in order of merit, in terms of an ascending mark scale from 1 to 10. The School will communicate the outcome of the selection procedure only to those who have been awarded a place not later than 22.12.2009. art. 6 Awarding of places Before the deadline fixed by the Adjudicating Committee, successful candidates should produce the documents mentioned under art. 7. In the event that one or more successful candidates fails to take up the offer of the place at the beginning of the course, the Committee will award the vacant place or places to suitably qualified candidates in strict adherence to the published order of merit. art. 7 Admission documents No later than one month after receiving confirmation of admission, successful candidates must confirm acceptance of their place and produce the following documents addressed to the School's Scientific Director: a) recent medical certificate (dated no more than 6 months previously) stating that the student is immune from illnesses incompatible with living in a community; b) degree certificate or equivalent qualification specifying the mark obtained in each single exam (where available), the date and the mark of the final examination; c) declaration of acceptance of all the rules and regulations of the School and College, exonerating the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo from any responsibility that might arise as a consequence of the rules and regulations not being observed; d) two passport photographs, one countersigned. The data relating to surname, first name, place and date of birth, nationality and residency must be covered by a document attesting their validity. The School reserves the right to verify the truth of data contained in the identification document. Furthermore, the School reserves the right to request from the competent authority of the State in question a certificate relating to the candidate's legal status. art. 8 Course attendance and student obligations Course members must pursue their studies in accordance with a program approved by the Scientific Committee including the compulsory attendance of high formation seminars which amount to 250 hours. At the end of the course, students must pass the end of course assessment. Such an assessment will be based on subjects dealt with in the seminars. art. 9 General regulations Elected candidates must be in residence on the day fixed by the School to begin their courses. Elected candidates can not accept any commitment incompatible with their duties. art. 10 Student awards and bursaries The course lasts one academic year (2009-2010). Elected candidates will be entitled to the following benefits: free tuition and exemption from course fees; complete free board and lodging in the Fondazione's Hall of Residence for the whole period of didactic activity, except for holiday periods defined by the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo; privileged access to the holdings and to the services of the Library; one return ticket from the place of residence to Modena. art. 11 Treatment of personal data As to article 13, decreto legislativo no. 196/2003 (Code for the protection of personal data), the candidates are nformed that the personal data provided by them or collected by the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo for their participation to the selection, will be treated exclusively in connection with the dischargement of the selection and the election of successful candidates. The treatment will be discharged at the Fondazione, via san Carlo 5, Modena (Italy). Data can be processed with electronic supports as far as necessary for the above mentioned purposes. The official in charge with the treatment will be responsible for the data to be kept and controlled so that they are not damaged or lost, on purpose or accidentally, nor accessed or used outside the purpose of their collection. The communication of personal data is instrumental to access the selection procedures and is requested to assess the eligibility of candidates. Failing to provide them may lead to an exclusion from the selection procedure. Ordinary and sensitive personal data, as well as the judicial record, will not be made public. Candidates are entitled to the rights mentioned at the article 7 of the above mentioned Decreto, namely confirmation of the existence of personal data and communication in an intelligible form, the origin of the personal data, the purpose and manner of their treatment, the logic of treatment when electronic supports are used, the identity of the persons responsible for the treatment, the subjects and categories of subjects who can receive communication concerning the personal data in their capacity as legal representatives. Lastly, candidates are entitled to the updating, correction or integration of the data, the deletion, transformation in anonymous form or closure of data if the provisions of law are broken. Candidates are finally reminded that, when legitimate reasons apply, they are entitled to object fully or partly to the treatment of the data.
