"Perifery - a choice or a verdict?"
Politics and Culture
Special Issue

"Politics and Culture" invites all interested scholars to reflect on
the issue of periphery which shall be the theme of the next issue of
our journal.

Periphery is first and foremost understood in terms of space and
dimension, particularly related to the urban space. Periphery defined
as an "area of the city located far from the City Centre; located on
the borders of the city hence the term ‘suburbium,' is part of the
world we live in today. Periphery is the physical area as well as a
category that may be applied in the field of geopolitics and
international relations.

Another meaning of the word periphery underpins dualism and division,
for periphery also means the "outer part of something as juxtaposed
to something central." Periphery thus understood goes far beyond
strictly physical borders embracing realities not only cartographical
but societal as well. This opens therefore new, and broader fields of
possible enquiry and interpretation. In this understanding of the
word, periphery enables the application of the term in the
description of various areas of human activity.

In yet another understanding of the term, periphery can be understood
to emphasize the secondary importance of an object, idea or worldview
termed as peripherial. Dictionary definition of periphery can also
mean "something less significant, secondary." This definition seems
to favour the interests of scholars of social science. However, this
definition can likewise reveal an interesting and fascinating area of
study for linguists and literary scholars.

In the light of these considerations, we welcome submissions related
but not limited to the following questions and issues:

- Peripherial and border wars vs. national security
- Slang and dialects - peripherial languages and the standard
  language
- High and low culture and literature
- Power and autonomy
- A label or a choice - when does periphery mean social exclusion
and when does it entail a positive aspect of individual or group
  identity
- Inclusion and exclusion
- When periphery becomes a sign of status
- Periphery within a metropolis
- The new dimension of the relationship between the core and
periphery model in the contemporary world
- Is there a place for periphery within the centre?
- The city vs. the countryside
- The dominant culture versus the subservient culture
- Periphery in culture, the culture of periphery
