"Justice and Migration: Paradoxes of Belonging"
15th International Metropolis Conference
International Metropolis Project
The Hague (Netherlands)
4-8 October 2010

__________________________________________________

The question of belonging is a key question in contemporary societies
due to the international migration and mobility of people across
borders and their subsequent participation in the host society.
Governments are confronted with different and sometimes competing
forms of belonging of their population, and are faced with questions
about the legitimacy and justification of citizenship claims.

The 2010 International Metropolis Conference in The Hague focuses on
questions of belonging. It will deal with various aspects of
belonging, the opportunities and challenges it poses in the context
of legitimacy and justification of processes of migration and
integration, as well as their consequences for social policies. In
doing so this conference will contribute to a better understanding of
how governments and international bodies can deal with different
forms of belonging in multicultural societies and a globalized world.

Furthermore, it will help us to better understand the implication for
immigrants and societies overall of processes of migration and
integration. It will help us to think through the effects of our
histories, the impact of globalization and high mobility, and the
most adequate responses to growing diversity. Finally, it will
provide us with a better practical understanding of what we need to
do to achieve more successful, peaceful and equitable societies.

Workshop Proposals

International Metropolis Conferences are renowned for their
high-calibre workshop programmes which consist of internationally
comparative and cross-sectoral workshops on a wide variety of topics
within the fields of migration and diversity. We are pleased to
announce that workshop proposals for the 15th International
Metropolis Conference will be accepted for consideration until April
2, 2010. Workshops which closely relate to the specific theme(s)
being covered by the conference will be of particular interest to the
Adjudication Committee.

Metropolis conferences aim to engage partners from different sectors
and different national contexts in discussion and debate through our
workshop programme. Accordingly, workshops must include
representation from more than one sector (policy; academic; NGO), and
from more than one country. While most workshops use a panel format,
other formats will be considered.

Individual Paper Proposals

Individual paper proposals will be accepted for consideration from
researchers, policy-makers, NGO representatives, and other interested
delegates.

Submissions will be placed in an online inventory that workshop
organisers will be encouraged to consult in the development of their
sessions. The inclusion of individual papers or presentations is at
the discretion of workshop organisers and, regrettably, individual
proposals not selected by workshop organisers will not be included in
the conference programme.
