Call for Papers "Colonial and Post-Colonial Remembering and Forgetfulness" Chimalpahin Conference 2010 Enkidu Magazine International Society for Cultural History and Cultural Studies (CHiCS) Mexico City (Mexico) 15-18 October 2010 __________________________________________________ This conference is devoted to colonial and post colonial remembering and forgetfulness viewed from a wide range of different interdisciplinary perspectives with particular attention to communicative issues and reflections on „self" and „otherness", memories, historical myths and other expressions of historical and political memory. We welcome submissions from all branches of the social sciences, humanities, as well as the arts. Graduate students are encouraged to participate. Papers will be considered on related themes and topics from a wide range of interdisciplinary perspectives. Presenters are encouraged to interpret the themes of the conference broadly and may explore any historical period, with any geographic focus. The conference focuses on conceptualizations and representations of cultural categories in colonial and post colonial realities, and the ways in which individuals have understood and enacted these frameworks in their lives. Among the themes of interest are the following: - Conquest and Continuity - Borders and Borderlands - Intra-ethnic translations - Representations of Otherness - Historical stereotypes in the construction of the past and the present - Gendered Spaces - Reinterpretations of History and Histories about colonialism and post-colonialism - Memory and Archives - The interaction of categories like nation, gender, class, and religion - Education and nation-building in post-colonial societies - Identities in transition - Historical Memory - Political Memory - Narrative and Linguistics - Narrative and Myth - Voice and reflexivity in oral and written records - Story, Dialogue and Discourse - Testimonial Narratives - Memory and Written Record - Language, Authority and Silence - Other Suggestions... Papers should be of approximately 30 minutes duration (circa 8 - 10 pages). Other forms of presentation, for instance workshops, panel debates and poster sessions will be considered on request. Selected papers from the conference will be published in book form. The conference sessions are conducted in Castillian and English. * Proposals for individual papers: Abstracts (ca 500 words) are to be submitted by 15 July, along with the presenter’s name, address, telephone, email, and institutional affiliation as well as a short biography (ca 100-150 words) and a list over audio-visual and other technical requirements. Each session will last for 2 hours allowing for 30 minutes for each speaker and a further 30 minutes for questions and discussion. Proposers should submit: (1) session title and a session intro (ca 100 words), (2) paper titles, (3) abstracts for each paper (500 words), (4) short biography for each participant and the panel chair (ca 100-150 words), (5) institutional affiliation and address for each participant, (6) audio-visual and other technical requirements. You will be notified within 10 days after we have received your abstract, whether your proposal has been accepted or rejected. Full conference papers should be submitted by the 1st of October if you want to be considered for the book. Abstracts and summaries of the conference papers will be made available at the conference web page by August.
