Call for Applications Theme: The Dynamics of Cultural Unity and Diversity in Southeast Asia Type: NEH Summer Institute Institution: Asian Studies Development Program, East-West Center University of Hawai'i Location: Honolulu, HI (USA) Date: 20.6.–22.7.2011 Deadline: 1.3.2011 __________________________________________________ This 5-week, NEH-funded Summer Institute on Dynamics of Cultural Unity and Diversity in Southeast Asia is designed to enable undergraduate educators infuse significant content on Southeast Asian cultures and societies into their teaching. Southeast Asia is one of the world’s cultural, environmental and economic hotspots, and there are significant challenges in teaching about a region that is so geographically and culturally varied. In this Institute, these challenges will be met by investigating how Southeast Asian cultures and societies have themselves negotiated impulses for both unity and diversity, with a particular focus on how the interplay of indigenous and outside cultures of authority have distinctively shaped religious, political, literary, artistic and historiographical traditions in the region. The Dynamics of Cultural Unity and Diversity in Southeast Asia will be hosted by the Asian Studies Development Program (ASDP) — a joint initiative of the East-West Center and the University of Hawai'i. A generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) allows participants selected for this program to receive a stipend of $3,900.
