Some newspapers described him as a dangerous agitator out to overthrow the European empires. "Bapu's" speeches packed in the crowds. Gandhi fascinated with his battle strategies: satyagraha (determinated and non-violent resistance), demonstrations, boycotts, which where so effective in causing the British to pull back. In addition to his origins from a country deemed mysterious, he also intrigued with his positions, which were hard to pigeonhole. Gandhi was for the caste system but against untouchability, for progress but against industrialization, for democracy but against parliamentary government, for national sovereignty but against nationalism. Many were the solidly established notions that were attacked in the rear by this little smiling man for whom material austerity was not only the basis of a healthy lifestyle but also the fundamental element of solidarity with living beings in their entirety. Gandhi, the "father of the nation" remains the most important reference in India today. He has inspired numerous struggles for freedom, notably that of Martin Luther King. Exactly 80 years to the day after his visit, this conference explores the relevance of Gandhism in contemporary globalisation. Environmental and financial crises, inequality, national sovereignty issues, controversies over union strategies, international solidarity, etc. can Gandhism help in recovering the path to progress, that of a reconciled humanity? Such is the question that the conference wishes to raise. The conference will be held in Paris, December 12 - 13, 2011. All propositions for papers must be sent before June 30th to: [email protected] Propositions should be less than 4000 signs, describe the author, his/her intention as well as the contents of the paper. The papers must imperatively touch on the question of the relevance of Gandhism in contemporary globalisation. The conference is open to all academic disciplines but also to any sort of contributions, be it from a militant, union, international solidarity, governmental or institutional milieu. The organisers are happy to examine any artistic proposition, exhibition, film, etc. Organisers: Institut Télécom Equipe de Recherche "Ethique, Technologies, Organisation, Société" (ETOS), Université Paris 4 Equipe d'Accueil "Rationalités Contemporaines", Université Paris 7 Centre de Sociologie des Pratiques et des Représentations Politiques (CSPRP), Université Paris 10 Equipe d'Accueil "Sophiapol", Université de Paris Ouest __________________________________________________ InterPhil List Administration: http://interphil.polylog.org Intercultural Philosophy Calendar: http://cal.polylog.org __________________________________________________
