What is our commitment to ourselves and to each other? Who is a good
global citizen? What role do we play as global citizens? Why and how
do we engage with our local, national and global community?

The goals of the conference are:

- to provide a place for academics, people in academic institutions
  as well as community organizations to be engaged with each other on
  global issues;
- to promote dialogue and exchange on global issues;
- to share ways of getting involved locally, nationally and
  internationally;
- to promote awareness and activism that will benefit local, national
  and global communities.

The conference titled “Engaging Hearts and Minds: An Agenda for
Global Citizenship Education” will look at activities, trends, issues
and possibilities in the field.

Proposals are invited from academics, researchers, graduate students,
community and civic organizations, practitioners, community
activists, policy makers and postsecondary institutions.

Panels or roundtables must be focused on one of these areas:

- Truth and Reconciliation around the world
- Indigenous Peoples - declaration and significance of rights
- Sustainability – environment, energy, human development, NGO’s
- Community Development
- Faculty Scholarship on Global Issues
- Human Rights and Individual Freedoms
- Research Methodologies
- Global Citizenship Curricula and Experience

Presentation Formats

1. Research Paper
Formal presentation of a research paper that advances knowledge on
equity, social justice and global citizenship

2. Panel Presentation
A group of papers on similar themes or research issues. (Papers
submitted for the research paper presentations and the panel
presentations can also be submitted for review for inclusion in the
Institute’s online academic journal)

3. Workshop
An interactive session on an issue or research Team

4. Presentation 
A presentation involving a variety of stakeholders (faculty, staff,
students, community organizations or funders)

5. Poster Presentation
Community organizations, institutions and individuals may also
present posters of their work as it relates to equity, social justice
and global citizenship.

Proposal Submission

An abstract of a maximum of 300 - 500 words should be sent to the
Institute for Global Citizenship and Equity at:
[email protected]

Deadline for submissions is November 10th, 2011
Presenters will be notified by January 13th, 2012 if their proposal
has be accepted for the conference.

Journal Publication

Presenters are encouraged to submit their papers for review and
inclusion in the Institute’s Journal of Global Citizenship and Equity
Education. Final drafts of the papers should be submitted to the
Institute by June 30th, 2012.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Samantha Nutt, MD
Founder and Executive Director, War Child Canada

Chosen by Maclean's Magazine for their annual Honour Roll as one of
"12 Canadians making a difference", Samantha Nutt is a medical doctor
with more than 15 years of experience working in war zones. She has
helped children in some of the world's most violent flashpoints,
working with War Child Canada, the United Nations and
non-governmental organizations across the globe.
