Call for Papers Theme: Vicissitudes of Violence Type: Inter-Disciplinary Conference on Conflict and Peace Institution: Department of Psychology, Indraprastha College for Women, University of Delhi Location: Dehli (India) Date: 16.–17.1.2012 Deadline: 15.12.2011 __________________________________________________ In the past few decades, there has been an unprecedented upheaval of peace and harmony all over the world. Be it state violence, conflicts between various nations, classes, and ethnicities, barbaric acts of terrorism, or mass movements of unrest, violence is treading on lives of myriad people cutting across religions, castes and nationalities. Amidst such conflict-torn societies, it has become almost imperative to understand the dynamics of violence and to devise effective peace-building initiatives. Though the themes of conflict, violence and terror have well been the focus of psychological enquiry, a more multi-disciplinary approach is required to understand violence and its complex ramifications. Despite great interest in understanding the major causes of violence and in developing effective prevention and intervention programs, knowledge generated by experts on different fields is fragmented and generally circumscribed within the circles where it is generated. The conference is visualized with the firm belief that an integration of inputs from diverse disciplines as well as the wider community is critical to reducing violence and to plan strategies toward restoring peace. It is based on the fundamental assumption that an understanding of the psychological roots of violence and conflict is imperative for promoting psychosocial well-being and for facilitating a peaceful co-existence. The Conference is envisaged with an aim to initiate an inter-disciplinary dialogue towards developing an understanding of the 'Vicissitudes of Violence’ situated in the context of Peace and Conflict Resolution.
