Conference Announcement Theme: Conceptions of Personhood and their Limits Subtitle: Inter/Transcultural Explorations Type: International Conference Institution: Department of Philosophy and Department of German, University of Mumbai Department of Philosophy, University of Cologne Society of Intercultural Philosophy Location: Mumbai (India) Date: 22.–24.2.2011 __________________________________________________ The concept of personhood has a rich variegated past in various philosophical traditions, and it continues to play a pivotal role in contemporary debates. Today, philosophical inquiry on this topic focuses on certain key aspects like, what does it mean to be a person? How does one distinguish a person from a non-person? On the basis of which unique characteristics does one distinguish one person from another? How does one attribute a continuous identity to a person over time? If so, can she be held morally responsible for her actions because of her diachronic identity? What, further, constitutes the metaphysical nature of a person? Is she a metaphysically independent substance, or a dependent entity which is only an aspect of something else? Is she a process or, perhaps, even an event? There are sound reasons for carrying on the debate at such a highly differentiated level. Given the salience of personhood in ethics, however, such an analytical focus, could in the long run, lead to a hiatus between the constitutive characteristics of a person and the moral dimension of personhood. Since the history of philosophy is, in general, replete with positions which link the descriptive and evaluative dimensions of personhood, this international conference seeks to unravel and critically review such salient viewpoints in the Indian and European traditions. It would also like to initiate a dialogue with those related disciplines which deal with the contours of personhood in an inter/transcultural setting.
