Call for Papers Theme: De-Parochializing Political Theory Type: Graduate Conference Institution: Consortium on Democratic Constitutionalism and Centre for Asian Pacific Initiatives, University of Victoria Center for Ethics, University of Toronto Location: Victoria, BC (Canada) Date: 2.–4.8.2012 Deadline: 15.6.2012 __________________________________________________ Graduate students are invited to submit papers for the upcoming conference "De-Parochializing Political Theory," August 2-4, 2012 at the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. A workshop dedicated to scholarship by postdoctoral, doctoral and M.A. candidates will be held on the last day of the conference. Globalization has radically transformed our social and political landscapes, creating new structures of interdependence and new risks and vulnerabilities. To respond, we need a globalized moral discourse about standards for judging politics, yet academic political theory continues to be dominated by Western political traditions. This workshop aims to deepen our understanding of what it means to engage in a genuine dialogue across Asian and European traditions of political theory. This project began with East Asian traditions of thought, and that remains central to this workshop, but it also begins the process of extending that dialogue to other non-Western traditions, including South Asian, more broadly Muslim, and Indigenous traditions. What are the most compelling reasons for de-centering Western traditions in our study of political ideas? What are the best methods for doing so? How can we best introduce our students into a global conversation about the moral bases of political relationship? We invite papers engaging any of these topics and also welcome specialized, theoretically rigorous work on the political thought of any geographic region. Accepted papers will be circulated in advance and must be submitted no later than 15 July 2012. Some travel funding may be available; if you will need funding support in order to participate, please indicate this in your application. To apply, send a paper title, abstract of no more than 300 words, and a current curriculum vitae to <[email protected]> no later than 15 June 2012. Successful candidates will be notified by email within two weeks of that date. Organized by Melissa Williams (University of Toronto), Leigh Jenco (London School of Economics), and Jeremy Webber (University of Victoria). Hosted by the Consortium on Democratic Constitutionalism (UVic), Centre for Asian Pacific Initiatives (UVic), the Shibusawa Foundation and the Center for Ethics (University of Toronto).
