Seemingly, the history of humanity has fashioned itself on the
tri-partite relationship between confinement, resistance and freedom.
Each and every epoch has its own forms of confinement which are met
with its own kind of resistance which may or may not be resolved with
some form of freedom. Ironically, even after the first decade of the
21st century these concepts still play a prominent role concerning
the human condition. One would think that centuries of accumulated
human thought and development would have opened up new avenues of
discussion. Yet the potency of these notions are still felt today,
despite the so-called fuzziness of borders that mark social /
cultural / historical categories and the increased mobility between
various ‘fields’ and ‘domains’ in critical studies. The modern
discourse has long freed itself from the grand-narratives, but at
what cost? How does the instability of centers affect our sense of
belonging as modern individuals? In what way have our definitions of
freedom changed in connection with new forms of confinement and
resistance? In this symposium we would like to provide a platform
where we could discuss how these concepts interact with one another
in shaping our personal and communal relationship with the world we
live in.

Our symposium is open to academics and graduate students from all
fields of study. Panel proposals chaired by colleagues from different
universities are especially welcome, along with individual papers,
roundtables, workshops and performances either in English or Turkish.
Please note that there will be no translations during the symposium.
