Call for Applications Theme: Comparative Statecraft and Constitutional Thought Type: PhD Studentships Institution: College of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Aberdeen Location: Aberdeen, Scotland (United Kingdom) Deadline: 8.3.2013 __________________________________________________ Our understanding of legitimate governance in principle and practice has generally been studied through the lens of western paradigms: the United Nations, the nation-state, the separation of church and state, the will of the people. Seeking to break this mould, the Research Project initiative will support contemporary and historical research from across the humanities and social sciences on the comparative study of indigenous understandings of legitimate governance. In particular, we are looking for research proposals on: (i) The development of indigenous constitutional documents and frameworks; (ii) The historical and ethnographic study of systematised modes of statecraft; (iii) The intellectual genealogy and writings of non-western constitutional thinkers. Awards In this inaugural year of the project 2013/14, we invite applications for 4 PhD studentships from high achieving students to join us in pursuing rigorous disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary research into these questions. Application Process A normal application for admission to the PhD programme is required and applicants should make explicit note their interest in being considered for a 'Comparative Statecraft and Constitutional Thought Studentship' in their application materials. Information about application procedures can be found here: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply.php Deadline All application materials must be received by 8 March 2013.
