Call for Papers Theme: Contested National Identities Type: Interdisciplinary Symposium Institution: Huron University College at Western Location: London, ON (Canada) Date: 16.–18.10.2013 Deadline: 1.4.2013 __________________________________________________ In pursuit of an interdisciplinary exchange, the organizing committee of “Contested National Identities” invites paper proposals in either English or French on topics related to the salience of and challenges to national identities from multiple disciplinary perspectives. The symposium will feature keynote addresses from Professor Nira Yuval-Davis of the University of East London and Professor Lorena Fontaine of the University of Manitoba, addressing gender and nationalism and Aboriginal peoples and national identities respectively. Additionally, there will be a round-table discussion of immigration and national identities; panelists include Dr. Pascal Maeder of the University of Basel, Professor Patrick Imbert of the University of Ottawa, Professor Judy White of the University of Regina, and Professor Paul Nesbitt-Larking of Huron University College, Western University. The disciplinary approaches of presenters may include (but are not exclusive to): anthropology, cultural studies, film studies, global studies, gender studies, geography, history, literary studies and criticism, philosophy, political studies, sociology, and women’s studies. In pursuit of as broad a dialogue as possible, the committee encourages graduate students as well as community members to apply. Community members need not have a background in an academic discipline to participate. The symposium will also feature a session devoted to undergraduate student perspectives and thus undergraduate students are likewise encouraged to submit proposals. Paper proposals should be no longer than 250 words, double-spaced. They should include a title and the presenter’s institutional affiliation and indicate the originality of the research in language accessible to non-specialists. They should be sent, along with an abbreviated one page curriculum vitae (and/or a short biographical note), to <[email protected]> by April 1st 2013. Panel proposals should include 2-3 paper proposals, (and their attendant documentation) and a title and one paragraph rationale for the panel, and may or may not suggest a chair (if proposing a chair, please attach a short CV and/or biographical note for him/her). The symposium will not feature discussants. The notifications of acceptance will be sent by May 15th 2013. Pending on grant approval, we are planning a Travel Grant Contest (for a total value of $1,000) for students enrolled in Canadian universities. All students presenting in a panel are eligible to apply. Students interested in applying for funding must submit a cover letter accompanying their paper proposal explaining their need for funding. The symposium organizers will adjudicate the grants. The requested amount is only able to subsidize a small number of proposals; recipients will be selected based on the quality of their paper proposals as follows: - A maximum of $150 for residents of Ontario residing 150 km or more from London - A maximum of $300 for residents of provinces other than Ontario. The organizers hope to publish an edited volume of the symposium’s proceedings. Those who wish their paper to be considered for publication are asked to submit their full drafts (in MLA style) by January 17th 2014. Submissions should be roughly 8,000 words (including references).
