The Centre for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy of KU Leuven's
Institute of Philosophy welcomes applicants for one fully-funded four
year PhD-fellowship in Political Philosophy (start date: 1 October
2014 or as soon as possible). The project for which the funding is
available aims to contribute to the development of a normative theory
of language policy by analyzing and articulating principles of
justice that should guide language policy. The fellowship is part of
a European FP7-project on 'Mobility and Inclusion in Multilingual
Europe' (www.mime-project.org). The successful applicant will write a
PhD-dissertation within this overarching theme of language policy and
language rights. The research group within which the PhD-fellow will
work is RIPPLE (Research in Political Philosophy Leuven). The project
is chaired by Prof. Helder De Schutter and by Prof. Nenad Stojanovic.

Profile

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

- The motivation to pursue creative work in normative political
  philosophy of societal relevance;
- An explicit interest in language policy and language identities;
- An MA (or equivalent) in Philosophy or Political Theory and
  academic distinction;
- The ability to present research results at conferences, and to
  publish in peer-reviewed journals;
- The ability to play an active role in the research group (including
  its weekly seminars);
- An excellent command of English; proficiency in, or a willingness
  to learn Dutch, French and/or German are a plus.

Enthusiastic and cooperative persons meeting these criteria are
kindly invited to apply online according to the instructions. Include
a cover letter, a CV, the names of two referees whom we might
approach prior to appointment, and a sample piece of writing not
exceeding 12.000 words (e.g. an MA thesis chapter). The deadline for
applications is Friday 15 August 2014. We will hold interviews with
selected candidates (in person or online) soon thereafter.

Offer

The fellow will receive a fellowship of approximately 1800 EUR/month
(after taxes and depending on past employment track and other
factors) and is entitled to the regular provisions for KU Leuven
fellowship-based doctoral researchers including holiday allowance,
end-of-year bonus, health care, hospital insurance, education for
children, a bicycle and bicycle maintenance, all for the duration of
the fellowship. In addition, s/he will be provided with office space
and a laptop. S/he will also be given some funding for research
activities such as attending conferences abroad and organizing
workshops and conferences in Leuven. The fellow will be required to
carry out minor educational responsibilities and provide minor
research assistance to both supervisors (not more than two hours on
average per week). S/he will become part of a dynamic group of
political philosophers consisting of six professors, four
postdoctoral fellows and twenty PhD students. The working language of
the group is English. The recipient of the fellowship is expected to
live in Leuven or its immediate vicinity and to work from the office.

A possibility exists within the project to spend one (funded) term at
the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau (Switzerland), where Prof.
Stojanovic is based.
