Call for Papers Theme: Analogical Reasoning – East and West Subtitle: Formal Models and Practical Applications Type: International Workshop Institution: Karl Jaspers Centre for Advanced Transcultural Studies, University of Heidelberg Location: Heidelberg (Germany) Date: 24.–25.11.2014 Deadline: 10.10.2014 __________________________________________________ Workshop Information "Analogical Reasoning – East and West" (AREW) is a two-day workshop aimed at bringing together people who are interested in analogical reasoning across the spectrum from the practical to the theoretical. Every day reasoning is rife with reasoning by analogy, and yet, despite this, analogical reasoning remains an under-developed area of study by logicians and others interested in the formal properties of correct reasoning. When is a piece of reasoning properly called analogical? What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for reasoning by analogy to be successful? Is all reasoning analogical, since even a formally valid argument can be said to be valid because it is analogical in form to all other valid arguments of the same form? These questions form one dimension of consideration in this workshop. Another dimension of consideration is the cultural: Do people from different cultures have different standards against which analogies and analogical reasoning is measured? Or is there a transcultural dimension to reasoning that flows across the East/West divide? We hope by bringing together researchers with expertise in formal models of analogical reasoning and those who study analogical reasoning in historical and cultural contexts we can begin an exciting and fruitful conversation. Submissions We invite submissions of abstracts for 20-25 minute papers (plus 5-10 min. discussion) on any aspect of analogical reasoning, including: - formal models of analogies and analogical reasoning - analogies in natural language - analogies in mathematics - analogies in scientific, medical, or legal reasoning - logic of analogy / analogical logic - historical aspects of analogical reasoning - (cross-/trans-)cultural aspects of analogical reasoning Submissions on related subjects will also be considered. Please send a short abstract, including title, name, and affiliation, to Dr. Sara L. Uckelman, with the subject “AREW abstract submission”. Important Dates Abstract deadline: October 10, 2014.
