Call for Papers Theme: Territoriality Subtitle: Inter-Disciplinary Analysis on Etno Territorial Claims Type: International Conference Institution: Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center (DAKAM) Department of International Relations ad Political Science, Istanbul University Location: Istanbul (Turkey) Date: 7.–9.12.2015 Deadline: 4.9.2015 __________________________________________________ TERRITORIALITY '15 is going to be held at Istanbul University on December 7-9, 2015. The conference will be coordinated Istanbul University's International Relations ad Political Science Department and DAKAM (Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center) and organized by BİLSAS (Science, Art, Sport Productions). Territoriality Conference welcomes participants from all around the world working on different disciplines. The conference aims at providing an inter-disciplinary analysis and discussion on ethno-territorial claims in an era of globalization. Its goal is to go beyond questions such as: “how are ethno-territorial problems managed?” by addressing the root causes of human conflict and identifying ways to develop peace. Living in a territory of “one’s own” presents one of the most powerful challenges to world peace and stability. Ethno-territorial claims in the sense of ‘ideological aspirations for the convergence of an imagined collective identity and a territorial region’ are often advocated as a ‘last resort solution’ to the anxieties, insecurities and fears of the ethnic groups. Yet they not only jeopardize political stability in the states concerned, may also provoke ethnic cleansing, genocide and war. It is worth analyzing under what type of conditions a peaceful ethno-territorial separation could be achieved and whether it advances a viable solution to the problem it addresses or not. Today what is striking to see is while the negative impacts of nationalism are often stressed and condemned; the emergence and development of exclusive ethnic-nationalist ideologies do receive unquestioned tolerance. However, if exclusive nationalism is not conducive to peace how come ethnic nationalism or micro-nationalism could be so? What has been observed so far is that the unsatisfied ethnic group becomes the powerful group in the new state but the essential dilemma hardly resolves. Does separation recreate the old problem with reversed roles? If not under what type of conditions and what type of separation could be a key to peaceful relationships? In an effort to delineate the most important factors that intervene in the relations between human needs and human spatial action this Conference will focus on the following questions: What are the factors that explain human attachment to territory? What is the relationship between human needs (with a special attention given to identity) and territoriality? Under what type of conditions does territorial attachment lead to conflict? Is it possible to detach identity needs from territory? What is the role of internal dynamics? How external actors affect the articulation of ethno-territorial claims, the escalation and de-escalation of ethno-territorial conflict and their peaceful resolution? Is territorial separation a path to peace or conflict? What conveys the duty, the ability or the desire to live together peacefully? Themes - Human Territoriality - Nationalism and Territory - Globalization and Territoriality - Roots of Ethno-Territorial Separatism - The Politics of Partition - The Role of External Powers - Dilemmas of Ethnic Separation - Essential Conditions to Maintain and Create Togetherness Dates Deadline for submission of abstracts: Sept 4, 2015 Deadline for registration: Oct 30, 2015 Deadline for full papers submission: Nov 6, 2015 Contact: Burçin Ercan, Conference Coordinator Eastern Mediterranean Academic Research Center (DAKAM) Firuzağa Mah.
