Call for Papers Theme: Beyond Boundaries Subtitle: Shifting Dynamics in Peace and Conflict Studies Type: Conference for Graduate Students and Early Career Faculty Institution: Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame Location: Notre Dame, IN (USA) Date: 6.–7.11.2015 Deadline: 15.7.2015 __________________________________________________ PhD and MA students at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame are proud to announce a conference for young scholars, carrying the theme “Beyond Boundaries: Shifting Dynamics in Peace and Conflict Studies.” The theme chosen for this year seeks to capture a diversity of cutting-edge research that illustrates and problematizes current conceptions in peace studies, and provides new directions for future research. The flows of peace and conflict do not always respect political, geographic, linguistic, or national boundaries. Rather, the intricate and dynamic pathways of ideas, attitudes, resources, and people - and the ways in which they interact - contribute to the creation of violent conflict and the building of peace both within and beyond borders. Current phenomena from migration patterns, to drug trade, to arms trafficking, and even the rise of ISIS and viruses like Ebola, lead practitioners and scholars alike to recognize the challenges that transcend traditional demarcations such as the nation-state. Similarly, transnational social movements, solidarity marches, or online protests and petitions have become dynamic forces that blur the boundaries between local peacebuilding actions and global diplomacy. From mediation efforts in Ferguson, MO, to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign against Boko Haram, new possibilities arise for what constitutes peaceful spaces, effective mechanisms, or legitimate agents of peacebuilding. Moreover, by recognizing that realities on the ground are constantly shifting, scholarship in peace studies must adapt its questions to move beyond a static conceptualization of peace and conflict to accurately reflect and engage with change, movement, or durability over time and space. For example, in light of recurring conflicts, linear conceptions of peace processes and the category of "post-conflict" have come under question. Similarly, there has been movement away from the liberal peace model toward approaches that are participatory, culturally sensitive, and inclusive of multiple levels of society. This conference welcomes individual papers, full panels, roundtables, posters, and workshops that explore the flows and changes taking place worldwide. In celebration of the Kroc Institute’s interdisciplinary approach, we highly encourage submissions that transgress established disciplinary boundaries in the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences. Conference organizers will arrange panels according to themes and topics that emerge from the submissions, with an eye toward both common interests and varying perspectives. We encourage submissions from young scholars (graduate students and early career faculty) that may address but are not limited to movement and change in the following areas and their relationship to peace and conflict (broadly defined).
