Call for Applications Theme: Cities and Religions Subtitle: Past and Present for a Peaceful Coexistence Type: Bi-annual Scholarship Institution: Sangalli Institute for the Religious History and Cultures Location: Florence (Italy) Date: November 2015 – May 2016 Deadline: 20.10.2015 __________________________________________________ From Stefano Bigliardi <[email protected]> Today, like in the past, the religions are often the pretext and the justification for wars and brutality, in order to demonstrate the tragic weakness of all the efforts made during the human path towards the respect of the Other. But, as we are totally convinced that, like Primo Levi stated, «everyone who forgets his past is condemned to live it again», the Sangalli Institute for the religious history and cultures in Florence believes that it is essential to support the research and the reflection in order to build a real and mutual respect among the different religious confessions, which are more and more obliged to live side by side in our cities and our communities. On the occasion of the international Forum Unity in diversity, that will take place in Florence from the 5th to the 8th November 2015, organized by the Mayor Dario Nardella and by the City Councillor to the international relations Nicoletta Mantovani, the mayors of a hundred cities of the world actively involved in maintaining peace and peaceful coexistence, reminding a similar initiative thought and desired in 1965 by the Mayor of Florence Giorgio La Pira, will be gathered in the city. The Sangalli Institute, following its vocation in supporting young researchers, have decided to establish a scholarship addressed to finance a young scholar, without any restriction of nationality, whose purpose would be to conduct a research plan on the subject of the coexistence and/or the settlement of the religious conflicts within some urban backgrounds. In collaboration with the Department for the international relations of the Municipality of Florence, and with the patronage of the same Municipality, the Sangalli Institute, with the participation of UBI – Banco di Brescia, offers: No. 1 pre-tax scholarship for a research concerning “Cities and Religions. Past and Present for a Peaceful Coexistence” for an amount of 6.000,00 (six thousand) euros. The research will take place between November 2015 and May 2016. The scholarship is addressed to already qualified Italian and Foreign Ph.Ds, who have obtained their doctorate, in Italy or abroad, no later than six years ago at the deadline of this announcement, in one of the following thematic macro-areas: Anthropology, Religious Sciences, Political Sciences, History, Art History, History of Languages and Literatures, History of Ideas and Sociology. Applications must be supplied by a detailed description of the research plan that the candidate wishes to develop at the Sangalli Institute. The proposal will concern some aspects and problems of the coexistence and/or the settlement of religious conflicts within some urban contexts. Research plans about the past and the present, and about European and non-European areas, will be admitted. Applications will receive an immediate receipt. Applications must include, esclusively in digital format: - the candidate CV, with his/her personal data, together with the precise information about the achievement of the Ph.D. at the deadline of this announcement, the course of his/her studies, the professional and research activities and any other information useful to outline the scientific and professional profile of the candidate; - a copy of the doctoral thesis, in pdf format; - a copy of at most 2 (two) scientific publications, in pdf format; - the research plan, in Italian and in English (or only in English for non-Italian speakers), with the precise indication of its steps, the published and un-published materials will be used and their presence in archives and/or libraries or other scientific institutions (6.000 characters at most). Incomplete or delayed applications will be excluded from the selection. In case of two or more worthy applications of the same quality level, the candidates could be summoned for an interview, in order to better examine his/her capacity and attitude towards the researches. The scholarship will be appointed by the 30th October 2015 and will be payed in two tranches: the first-one will be delivered to the winner by the Mayor of Florence Dario Nardella during the international Forum Unity in diversity; and the second at the end of the semester, after the submission of a final report, clearly illustrating that the research is at an advanced and formalized stage. The results of the selection will be published on the web site of the Sangalli Institute and of the Municipality of Florence, with the precise indication of the classification of the qualified candidates. The scholarship holder must send to the Presidency of the Institute a report on the progresses of his/her researches at the mid-term of the scholarship, and a final report. The failure to comply with the delivery of the reports at the scheduled times or with their approval by the Institute will involve the interruption or the revocation of the second tranche of the scholarship. The Sangalli Institute for the religious history and cultures and UBI – Banco di Brescia will expect to be cited in every scientific publications resulting of the scholarship granted by the Institute itself to the holder. The research outcomes could be presented or discussed during one of the future meetings of the Forum, taking place in another city of the network. The scholarship holder is not obliged to stay uninterruptedly in Florence, but he/she must participate to every scientific activities of the Institute, during the period of his/her scholarship (1st November 2015-1st May 2016), together with, obviously, the participation to the ceremony in which the scholarship will be appointed.
