Call for Papers Theme: Hermeneutic Understanding of Translation of Early Buddhist and Christian Scriptures Subtitle: Theories and Praxis Type: International Conference Institution: Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) Wuhan University Location: Wuhan (China) Date: 6.–7.7.2016 Deadline: 10.4.2016 __________________________________________________ In the process of introduction of Buddhism and Christianity into China, translation of their scriptures became fundamental. After Buddhism came into China from India through silk road during Han Dynasty the translation of Buddhist scriptures became the major work for many Buddhist monks. Gradually it entered into its mature period in the Tang Dynasty. Xuan Zang, a Buddhist monk, was the chief translator. He not only established systematic and operative translation theories, but also translated numerous Buddhist classics which were treasured till today. Christianity first came to China in the Tang Dynasty. The translation of Christian scriptures began from a variety of Central Asian languages into Chinese text. It borrowed a quite number of Buddhist terminology in Chinese, which led to the misinterpretation of the early Christianity as "a sect of Buddhism" in China at that time. This conference will focus on investigating the translation theories and praxis of early Buddhism and Christianity scriptures, as well as the hermeneutical understanding and interpretation in the course of religious scriptures into Chinese. It is hoped to provide some reference to interreligious dialogue in this pluralistic era.
