Call for Papers Theme: Secularization and Toleration Type: International Conference Institution: Instituto de Filosofía, Universidad de los Andes Location: Santiago de Chile (Chile) Date: 9.–11.11.2016 Deadline: 15.2.2016 __________________________________________________ A similar fate has befallen narratives of secularization and toleration. Not long ago, they were integrated into narratives of progress and modernity, in which both of them were understood as deeply intertwined. More recent theoretical and empirical scholarship, including historical research and more nuanced accounts of secularization and desecularization, have seriously challenged oversimplified claims about linear development, and offered new and more subtle accounts of these complex processes. In this context of changed scholarship, the conference seeks to further explore the relationship between secularization and toleration. The conference is open to both historical and systematic contributions from all the relevant disciplines. We are happy to receive proposals from those interested in giving a 45 minutes lecture, followed by approximately 30 minutes for Q & A. Lecture proposals of no more than one page in length should be submitted, along with a short CV, to [email protected] by February 15, 2015. A selection of proposals will be made and the authors will be notified by the end of February. Conference languages will be Spanish and English. However, we ask those who will make their presentation in Spanish to send an English version of their text a month in advance. The registration cost of USD120 covers lunch for the three days of the conference. Suggestions for hotel reservations in Santiago (and for further sightseeing in Chile) will be made after the selection of the proposals. Confirmed speakers: Andrew R. Murphy (Rutgers) Vyacheslav Karpov (Western Michigan University) Contact: Manfred Svensson Instituto de Filosofía Universidad de los Andes Av.
