Call for Papers Theme: Philosophical Foundations of Global Law Type: International Conference Institution: University of Cartagena Location: Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) Date: 24.–27.8.2016 Deadline: 15.6.2016 __________________________________________________ The conference “Philosophical Foundations of Global Law” will take place at the University of Cartagena, 24-27 August, 2016. Papers will be publicly presented on Wednesday and Thursday, 24 and 25 August. A closed workshop will take place on Friday, 26 August, which will involve discussion of the papers. Following the conference, we will host a meeting of the International Network on Transnational Legal and Political Theory, on Saturday 27 August. The meeting will present an opportunity for discussion of works in progress and (if time permits) a roundtable discussion of the conference themes. We regret that we are unable to provide funding to support travel for the conference or the Network Meeting (other than for those who have already been formally invited to the conference). We will, however, cover the conference fee for those members of the Network who are able to join us and provide refreshments for the Network meeting. We will try to cover the accommodation for some members of the Network, specially graduate students. The following have confirmed their participation: Pavlos Eleftheriadis (Oxford) Klaus Gunther (Frankfurt a.M) Mattias Kumm (NYU) Maks del Mar (QM London) Ralf Michaels (Duke) Neil Walker (Edinburgh) Hans Lindahl (Tilburg) (video-conference) William Twining (UCL) (video-conference) Two additional speakers, TBA. Topic The idea of a “global” or “Cosmopolitan” law has been popularized without much reference to or reflection upon the traditional issues of political and legal philosophy. This conference seeks to explore such questions, including (but not limited to): What do we mean by ‘global law’? How are we to account for its legal nature? Do we need new conceptual tools in order to do that? Can we claim that there is a global legal system or a global constitution? How are we to determine its content? When is global law or global constitutionalism legitimate? When is it legitimate to disobey it? How are we to understand adjudication in a global context? Submissions The organizers are pleased to invite abstracts for further papers on the theme of the conference. Abstracts of between 500 and 750 words should be submitted to [email protected] by 15 June 2016. Up to four papers will be chosen. The selected papers will be due on 1 August 2016. Conference fee will be waived for successful authors and Accommodation in Cartagena, lunch and dinner will be covered for successful authors. Unfortunately, no assistance with the costs of travel will be provided. Each of these papers will be distributed in advance and, they will be discussed at workshop on August 26. The organizers hope that all the papers presented in the conference will subsequently be published in a collection of new work on the topic. Format Public lectures last one hour: 40-45 minutes for presentations and 20-15 minutes for questions. In the workshop, we will take sessions of 45-60 minute to discuss one or two papers. The presenter has 5-10 minutes to present the core of his argument, and the remaining time will be devoted to discussion, commentaries and questions from the audience. The workshop will be held in English. Venue All the activities will be held in the Campus Cloister of St. Augustine, located in the Walled City of Cartagena – Historical Downtown (Cra. 6 - Calle de la Universidad # 36-100).
