We tend to infer what others must be like from what we take ourselves
to be like. Critics of Western philosophical traditions often accuse
the latter of misconstruing and misjudging non-Western cultures and
peoples. Yet non-Western perceptions of Western cultures and persons
are no less prone to these errors. Indeed, we misperceive others even
within our own cultural contexts, not just across such contexts: none
of us are secure from being perceived and hence misperceived by
others. This conference explores these issues from the perspective of
African and Western philosophical traditions.
