This intensive, one-week residential program run by two distinguished translators, Patrick Hersant, Department of English Literature and translation, Université Paris 8, and Catherine Porter, Society for the Humanities, Cornell University, will bring together French and English researchers to develop their skills in translation in their research field. Critical thought, which has long distinguished scholarship in the Yale French Department, ranges from “French theory” to cultural studies, interdisciplinary work in literature and the social sciences, and literary criticism writ large, in all its methodological variety. Aims - Promote networking among young French, British and American researchers, PhD and postdoctoral students, and freelance translators - Enhance the translation skills of young researchers - Give them key concepts and analytical tools to engage with the texts they are working on - Offer a state-of-the-art overview of their respective research fields - Foster connections between scientific journals and skilled translators Conditions of eligibility - You are a researcher, a PhD or a postdoctoral student, or a freelance translator - You are available from 01/16 to 01/20/2018 Modalities - A group of 8 people per workshop, among whom 4 participants translating from French into English and 4 from English into French - Collaboration with colleagues translating in the opposite direction - 2 translators-in-residence will run the workshops (one per direction) - The workshop requires the active involvement of all attendees, in order to encourage exchanges - Prior to the workshop, everyone prepares in advance all texts to be discussed during the 5 days - A 3-hour session is devoted to each text, problematic points are discussed among the participants under the guidance of the translators-in-residence In addition, the program includes two side-events (one panel discussion and one lecture), which offer the participants the opportunity to meet publishers and editors of journals, as well as a leading scholar in their respective fields. Cet atelier intensif d’une semaine en résidence, encadré par deux traducteurs expérimentés, Patrick Hersant – Maître de conférence en littérature et traduction à l’université Paris 8 – et Catherine Porter –– Visiting Professor, Society for the Humanities, Cornell University- ––, réunit de jeunes chercheurs francophones et anglophones pour approfondir leurs compétences traductives dans leur domaine de recherche. La pensée critique a toujours marqué la vie intellectuelle du département de français de Yale. Par pensée critique nous envisageons une vaste gamme méthodologique qui s’étend de la “French Theory” aux études culturelles, de l’approche interdisciplinaire en littérature et sciences sociales à la critique littéraire des différentes tendances. Objectifs - Favoriser la mise en réseau des jeunes chercheurs, doctorants, post-doctorants et traducteurs indépendants entre la France, le Royaume-Uni et les États-Unis - Approfondir les compétences traductives des jeunes chercheurs - Leur permettre d’acquérir des concepts-clés et des outils d’analyse qui les aident à aborder les corpus en langue étrangère sur lesquels ils travaillent - Présenter aux participants un état des lieux de la recherche dans leurs champs disciplinaires respectifs - Mettre en relation les revues scientifiques et les traducteurs compétents dans leurs domaines Conditions d’éligibilité - Être doctorant, post-doctorant, chercheur ou traducteur indépendant - Être entièrement disponible du 16 au 20-01-18 Modalités - Groupe de 8 personnes par atelier (4 participants traduisant du français vers l’anglais et 4 dans l’autre sens) - Travail avec un ou des collègues traduisant vers l’autre langue - 2 traducteurs en résidence pour conduire les ateliers (un tuteur vers chaque langue) - Participation active de tous les intervenants dans le but de favoriser les échanges - Préparation en amont par chaque participant de l’ensemble des textes mis en discussion pendant les 5 jours - Séquence de 3 heures consacrée à chaque projet pour débattre des points problématiques entre participants et sous la conduite des deux traducteurs en résidence Le programme prévoit en outre deux événements complémentaires (une table ronde et une conférence), qui permettent aux participants de rencontrer des éditeurs et responsables de revues, ainsi qu’un conférencier spécialiste de leur domaine.
