The African Centre for Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (ACEPS)
at the University of Johannesburg Philosophy Department invites
applications for a full time Postdoctoral Research Fellow to conduct
empirical research for the ‘Geography of Philosophy Project’ (GPP).

The project

The project is funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Its Principal
Investigators are Profs Edouard Machery, Stephen Stich, and Clark
Barrett. It involves ten interdisciplinary teams around the world and
empirically explores cultural differences in three central
philosophical concepts – knowledge, understanding, and wisdom.

Job Description

Start date: 1 February 2019

Duration: 1 year, renewable for 1 further year upon successful
performance
Mentor: SA team-leader for GPP, Veli Mitova
Salary: UJ postdoc rates; tax free; (ca. USD 22 000 p/a)

Tasks

The successful candidate will be based at ACEPS and will be expected
to:
- conduct empirical studies on the three concepts of knowledge,
  understanding, and wisdom
- analyse data
- author and co-author papers for publication
- organise project meetings, one international conference, and
  possibly several workshops
- be actively involved in the life of ACEPS and the Project

No teaching will be expected of the candidate.

Eligibility

The successful candidate:
- is fluent in English
- has completed an excellent PhD by the date of application
- has specialised in at least one of the following areas:
  linguistics, psychology, anthropology, Indigenous Knowledge Systems,
  and/ or experimental philosophy
- has a clear track record of running moderately-scaled empirical
  research projects
- has expertise in qualitative and quantitative (mixed methods) data
  collection and data analysis
- has experience with human subjects
- has a good publication record for career stage

It would be an advantage if the candidate:
- is familiar with different corpus tools to facilitate analyses of a
  large linguistic corpora
- is fluent in one or more Southern African languages
- has some philosophy background
