Call for Papers Theme: Democracy and Social Development Type: International Conference Institution: Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (RVP) Institute of Philosophy, Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences Location: Hanoi (Vietnam) Date: 24.–25.7.2019 Deadline: 20.4.2019 __________________________________________________ Theme There exists a complicated relationship between democracy and social development. Some people claim that democracy can only be implemented and developed in countries which are able to foster economic development and social justice and to guarantee human rights. For democracy is necessary means for exercising human freedom and personal powers. Indeed, in the process of human development the emergence of various forms of democratic socio-political organizations and democratizations is an important step for human society. For democracy has served an important premise for individual human being to achieve his or her freedom, autonomy, equality and rights. However, it is not easy to balance the dialectic relationship between democracy and social development. Some argue that democratic systems along with democratic institutions, accountability mechanisms and check and balance provisions, social development can be properly promoted. While others think that social development requires a strong, centralized and highly autonomous government, especially in those less developed countries where the democratic politics is simply too unpredictable to provide a democratic structure hence to develop a democratic system. Rather the emergence of democracy will not foster the process of social development. At present Vietnam is movinig fast in terms of the process of democratization and social development. Although it has made great achievements many new challenges also emerged.
