Scholarly discussions around the experiences of most post-contact
societies are encountered through theoretically and methodologically
radical works such as found within the purview of postcolonial
studies. We get a sense of the particularities and the universals in
how colonial legacies are experienced and challenged. Yet, we must
acknowledge the persistent domination of received over the indigenous
knowledges in Africa for instance. In the Africanity Scholars
inaugural conference, we ask how one might conceptualise loss,
bondage, and regret in thinking about the tensions between
autochthonous and heterochthonous knowledge systems. How do religion,
technology, culture, society, disciplinary formations, academic
discourses, etc. structure and simultaneously play as the sites of
these tensions? Papers are invited from academics, scholars,
practitioners and advocates of indigenous knowledge systems and
graduate students whose research interests relate to these questions.
Paper present ers can address the following and any other related
themes:
(1) Paradigms, research agenda and the framing of reality
(2) ‘Discursive formations’: Inclusion and exclusion
(3) The politics of knowledge production (traditional, contemporary,
etc.) in post-contact societies
(4) Western research methodologies and knowledge production in post-
contact Societies
(5) Indigenous methodologies: patterns and typologies
(6) Who owns knowledge? The researcher? The researched? The funder?
The publisher? Society?
(7) Who studies who? For who? For what?
(8) Gender roles and contestations in knowledge production
(9) New cultures (Internet, social media, etc.) and the reordering of
epistemologies
(10) Visual epistemologies: seeing and knowing
(11) Knowledge policing: theory and practice (publishers,
institutional gatekeepers, hiring and promotional practices,
etc.)
(12) Language, ideology and knowledge
