Call for Papers Theme: Enlightenment Identities Type: 15th ISECS Congress Institution: International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS) British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS) Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society (ECSSS) University of Edinburgh Location: Edinburgh, Scotland (United Kingdom) Date: 14.–19.7.2019 Deadline: 1.2.2019 __________________________________________________ (Version française en bas) The International Congress on the Enlightenment is the quadrennial meeting of the International Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (ISECS) and the world’s largest meeting of specialists on all aspects of the eighteenth century. The 15th ISECS Congress will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from Sunday 14 July to Friday 19 July 2019. It is organized by the British Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies (BSECS) and the Eighteenth-Century Scottish Studies Society (ECSSS), and hosted by the University of Edinburgh. While proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables on any theme relevant to the long eighteenth century will be welcome, we will particularly invite contributions that address the theme of ‘Enlightenment Identities’. ‘Identity’ is a timely theme which shows no sign of losing the attention of eighteenth-century scholars across the disciplines. Above all, the enquiries are open-ended. Identities can be individual or communal. They can be local, regional, colonial, national, federal, imperial, and/or global. Indeed, identities are characteristically complex. They are forged by factors ranging from the personal to wider political, military, religious, intellectual, techno-scientific, cultural, ethnic, social, sexual, economic, class/caste, geographical, and historical contexts. Unsurprisingly, ‘identity’ was much disputed in the eighteenth century, with the concept of the enlightened individual. Moreover, these questions overlap with big definitional debates about the nature of Enlightenment. Was there ‘an Enlightenment project’, or many different national versions, or a radical Enlightenment — or none? Given these interlocking complexities, the big theme of ‘Enlightenment Identities’ constitutes an alluring topic for an international gathering in the great Enlightenment city of Edinburgh, whose eighteenth-century denizens, like Adam Smith, were at once Scottish, British, and ‘citizens of the world’. Proposals Proposals are invited for individual papers, preformed panels of three or four papers, and roundtables of between four and six participants. Proposals may be in English or French. The final deadline for submission of papers and panel proposals is Friday 1 February 2019. Bursaries ISECS is delighted to offer bursaries for Edinburgh Congress participants to cover (partly or totally) the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals. Priority will be given to doctoral students, early career scholars, and scholars from countries with weak currencies. Applicants must be intending to give papers. - Applications must be submitted to the email address on the official form, with a separate letter of recommendation from someone well known to the applicant. - The deadline for submissions is 31 January 2019. Applications will be reviewed by a selection sub-committee. In early March, results will be announced to applicants, who have until 1 April 2019 to accept or decline. Le 15ème Congrès de la SIEDS aura lieu à Édimbourg, en Écosse, du dimanche 14 juillet au vendredi 19 juillet 2019. Le Congrès est organisé par la Société britannique pour l’étude du dix-huitième siècle (BSECS) et la Société d’études écossaises du dix-huitième siècle (ECSSS) et sera accueilli par l’université d’Édimbourg. Bien que les propositions de communications, de sessions ou de tables rondes sur tout sujet se rattachant au long dix-huitième siècle soient les bienvenues, nous encourageons tout particulièrement les contributions explorant le thème de « Lumières et identités ». « L’identité » est une thématique très pertinente qui continue de susciter l’intérêt des dix-huitièmistes, toutes disciplines confondues. Surtout, la question identitaire reste une source de débats sans cesse renouvelés. Les identités peuvent être individuelles ou collectives. Elles peuvent être locales, régionales, nationales, fédérales, impériales et/ou mondiales. En effet, elles se distinguent par leur complexité. Elles sont forgées par des éléments qui vont de l’échelon personnel à des contextes plus larges, d’ordre politique, militaire, religieux, intellectuel, techno-scientifique, culturel, ethnique, social, sexuel, économique, géographique, historique ou ayant trait à la classe ou la caste. Il est donc peu étonnant que l’identité ait été fortement débattue au dix-huitième siècle autour du concept de l’« individu éclairé ». Par ailleurs, toutes ces questions recoupent les grands débats concernant la définition de la nature des Lumières : y a-t-il eu un seul « projet des Lumières », de multiples versions nationales de celui-ci, un mouvement radical des Lumières ou bien rien de tout cela ? En raison de ces complexités imbriquées, la grande thématique « Lumières et identités » constitue un sujet attractif pour un rassemblement international dans cette grande ville des Lumières qu’est Édimbourg, dont les résidents au dix-huitième siècle, comme Adam Smith, étaient à la fois écossais, britanniques et « citoyens du monde ». Propositions Nous vous invitons à nous faire parvenir vos propositions pour des communications individuelles, des sessions complètes de trois ou quatre communications et des tables rondes composées de quatre à six participants. Les propositions peuvent être en anglais ou en français. La date limite pour soumettre vos propositions de communications et de séances est le vendredi 1 février 2019. Bourses la SIEDS est heureuse d’offrir des bourses pour certains des participants au Congrès d’Edimbourg qui leur permettront de couvrir (en partie ou en totalité) les frais de voyage et de séjour, ainsi que les repas. La priorité sera donnée à ceux qui souhaitent présenter une communication et qui appartiennent aux catégories suivantes : doctorants, chercheurs en début de carrière et chercheurs venant de pays à monnaie faible. - Les dossiers de candidature doivent être présentés sous une forme spécifique, et être accompagnés d’une lettre de recommandation rédigée par quelqu’un qui connaît bien le/la candidat(e). - La date limite d’envoi des dossiers de candidature est fixée au 31 janvier 2019 GMT. Ils doivent être adressés à [email protected] et seront examinés par un comité de sélection. Au début du mois de mars, les résultats de la sélection des dossiers seront annoncés aux candidats qui pourront accepter ou refuser la bourse jusqu’au 1er avril.
