Call for Papers Theme: Advancing Human Rights Values Subtitle: Equality of Dignity and Opportunities Type: Inter-Provincial Conference Institution: African Canadian Resource Network Sask Location: Regina, SK (Canada) Date: 23.–25.5.2019 Deadline: 31.3.2019 __________________________________________________ This conference will build on a community participatory action research project funded by the Government of Canada – Canadian Heritage Department that is implemented in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia (2017 to March 2020). It will highlight the human, social and economic cost of the intersection of oppression, critical anti-oppressive theory and practice plus initiatives aimed at advancing equality of human worth and dignity, opportunities and, the full participation of African Descent Canadians, the Indigenous peoples, New-comers and other historically marginalized communities such as Ukrainian Canadians. Main Theme: Exposing and addressing the human, social and economic cost of the intersection of oppression based on perceived “race”, gender and religious differences. Conference presentations, discussion panels, workshops and posters may also be developed and presented around any of the following sub-themes. 1. Canada’s leadership in advancing human rights values, responsibilities and related benefits 2. Progress, challenges and living up to signed commitments: 70 Years (1948-2018) since the Universal Declaration of Human rights; 40 years ( 1978-2018) since UNESCO Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice, and more recently UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) – Examples of creative initiatives framed within post-modernism and critical social theory that incorporate language and discourse. 3. People and Human Dignity, Human Resource and Canada’s future: Immigration, settlement and harmonious integration with the Indigenous peoples and established communities. 4. The international decade of people of African descent (2015-2024): the history, contributions, status and challenges, including identity crisis, internalized oppression coupled with other levels and forms in Canada and beyond. 5. Strategies for collaboration across human and cultural differences: Stories from Indigenous Peoples, African and Ukrainian descent Canadian Communities along with others that have historically and continue to experience oppression.
