Call for Publications Theme: Humans and Animals Publication: polylog. Zeitschrift für interkulturelles Philosophieren Date: Issue No. 45 (June 2021) Deadline: 1.10.2019 __________________________________________________ (Deutsche Version unten | Versión española abajo) For centuries mankind has sought its place between the animals and the gods. This self-understanding in the sense of a significant difference between humans and animals and the quest for a decisive difference (mainly logos in the twofold sense of reason and language, but also work and culture) have also shaped the German tradition of philosophical anthropology up to the late 20th century. The German language itself has played a significant role in this, as it uses different terms for 'eating,' 'dying' and others when it comes to animals or humans. At the same time, people from the colonies were exhibited on annual fairs in "civilized" Europe just like exotic animals, and their purported "primitiveness" was frequently equated with a mere animality. Even as late as the 20th century, people were brutally treated as animals by war criminal regimes. However, in recent decades, developments in philosophy and beyond have raised the question of the need to revise the hitherto prevailing understanding of animals in the West. Philosophical relevance for the relationship between humans and animals is evident, among others, in the spreading relativization of the differentialist paradigm with reference to scientific evolutionism, the establishment of animal ethics as an independent discipline and interdisciplinary animal studies, the keen interest of contemporary artists in the animal other, explorations in the field of empirical animal aesthetics and not least theories of posthumanism. Nonetheless, hardly any theoretical alternative models from non-Western philosophical and cultural traditions have been investigated. Against this background, polylog. Zeitschrift für interkulturelles Philosophieren invites to place the philosophical understanding of animality and the relationship between humans and animals in an intercultural context. Possible topics and questions concern: - The status of animals in non-Christian religions; totem and the divinity of animals; mythological hybrids between animals and humans; - Are there animal subjects? What concepts are offered by non-Western cultures to better understand animals, without recourse to the terms of subject, mind, reason, spirit, freedom and inwardness that are prejudiced by anthropocentric humanism? What epistemological advantages do these offer in terms of access to the inner life of animals? - Agency of animals and comparisons between humans and animals in social and political philosophy. Animals as metaphors for marginalized and oppressed groups of humans. Women, slaves and "primitives" as "mere animals"? And conversely, is the animal life nothing but a "naked life"? - Animal liberation and postcolonialism, postcolonial ecocriticism; - Reflections from media philosophy and critical views on contemporary culture regarding the fluctuation of animal understanding between machines and their anthropomorphic Disneyfication; - Patho- and biocentric ethical theories in non-Western cultures and philosophies. Can protomoral feelings be detected in the animal kingdom? Do animals die or do they simply perish? - Interspecies communication and friendship in non-Western cultural traditions; - Veganism and spirituality in non-Western cultures; - Do animals have a cultural capacity and can the concept of interculturality consequently be applied also to the relationship between humans and animals or symbioses of several animal species? Are zoos and aquariums artificially established "intercultural" biotopes? - From animals as mere symbols and glosses in philosophy to the philosophical interpretation of dealing with animals in everyday life; - The relevance of cultural particularities for animal welfare, the legitimacy of animal rights and the assessment of biodiversity; - Posthumanism as an opportunity or an endangerment for animals? - Animal breeding as an art? Art by animals and for animals. We cordially invite contributions by philosophers as well as academics from other disciplines in German, English, French or Spanish. Dieses Selbstverständnis im Sinne eines wesentlichen Unterschieds zwischen Mensch und Tier und die Suche nach einer ausschlaggebenden Differenz (meistens der Logos im doppelten Sinne von Vernunft und Sprache, aber auch die Arbeit und die Kultur) haben auch die deutsche philosophische Anthropologie bis spät ins 20. Jahrhundert geprägt. Dabei spielte eine nicht geringe Rolle die deutsche Sprache selbst, die zwischen ‚essen‘ und ‚fressen‘, ‚sterben‘ und ‚verenden‘ usw. unterscheidet. Zugleich aber stellte das „zivilisierte“ Europa Menschen aus den Kolonien genauso wie exotische Tiere auf Jahresmärkten aus und setzte häufig ihre „Primitivität“ der bloßen Animalität gleich. Noch im 20. Jahrhundert wurden Menschen in kriegsverbrecherischen Regimes bestialisch als Tiere behandelt. Entwicklungen in den letzten Jahrzehnten in der Philosophie und darüber hinaus werfen allerdings die Frage nach der Notwendigkeit auf, das bisher im Westen vorherrschende Verständnis vom Tier zu revidieren. Philosophische Relevanz für das Mensch-Tier-Verhältnis haben unter anderen die sich verbreitende Relativierung des differentialistischen Paradigmas mit Rückgriff auf den naturwissenschaftlichen Evolutionismus, die Gründung der Tierethik als eigenständige Disziplin und der interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Animal Studies, das rege Interesse zeitgenössischer Künstler am tierischen Anderen, Untersuchungen im Bereich der empirischen Tierästhetik und nicht zuletzt Theorien des Posthumanismus. Nichtsdestoweniger wurden bisher kaum theoretische Alternativmodelle in nicht-westlichen philosophischen und allgemein kulturellen Traditionen gesucht. Vor diesem Hintergrund lädt polylog. Zeitschrift für interkulturelles Philosophieren ein, das philosophische Verständnis der Animalität und der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Tier in einen interkulturellen Kontext zu stellen. Mögliche Themen und Fragestellungen betreffen: - Den Status von Tieren in nicht-christlichen Religionen; Totem und Göttlichkeit von Tieren; mythologische Hybride zwischen Tier und Mensch - Gibt es tierische Subjekte? Welche Begriffe bieten nicht-westliche Kulturen, um Tiere besser zu verstehen, ohne auf den vom anthropozentrischen Humanismus vorbelasteten Begriffen von Subjekt, Geist, Vernunft, mind, Freiheit und Innerlichkeit zu rekurrieren? - Welche erkenntnistheoretischen Vorteile bieten diese in Bezug auf den Zugang zum inneren Leben von Tieren? - Agency von Tieren und Vergleiche zwischen Mensch und Tier in der Sozial- und politischen Philosophie. Tiere als Metaphern für marginalisierte und unterdrückte Menschengruppen. Frauen, Sklaven und „Primitive“ als „bloße Tiere“? Und umgekehrt, ist das animalische Leben nichts anderes als ein „nacktes Leben“? - Animal Liberation und Postkolonialismus, postkolonialer Ökokritizismus - Kulturkritische und medienphilosophische Überlegungen über das Schwanken des Tierverständnisses zwischen Maschinen und ihrer anthropomorphischen Disneysierung - Patho- und biozentrische ethische Theorien in nicht-westlichen Kulturen und Philosophien. Lassen sich protomoralische Gefühle im Tierreich feststellen? Sterben Tiere oder verenden sie nur? - Interspezies Kommunikation und Freundschaft in nicht-westlichen Kulturtraditionen - Veganismus und Spiritualität in nicht-westlichen Kulturen - Sind Tiere kulturfähig und lässt sich folglich der Begriff von Interkulturalität auch auf das Verhältnis zwischen Menschen und Tieren oder auf Symbiosen mehrerer Tierarten anwenden? Sind Zoos und Aquarien künstlich eingerichtete „interkulturelle“ Biotope? - Von Tieren als bloßen Symbolen und Glossen in der Philosophie zur philosophischen Deutung des Umgangs mit Tieren im Alltag - Relevanz kultureller Besonderheiten für den Tierschutz, für die Legitimierung von Tierrechten und die Bewertung der Biodiversität - Der Posthumanismus als Chance oder Gefährdung für Tiere? - Tierzucht als Kunst? Kunst von Tieren und für Tiere. Wir laden Philosophinnen und Philosophen, aber auch Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler anderer Disziplinen sehr herzlich zu einem Beitrag auf Deutsch, Englisch, Französisch oder Spanisch ein. Beiträge aus nicht-europäischen Denktraditionen sind dabei von ganz besonderem Interesse. Esta obviedad sobre la existencia de una diferencia básica entre el hombre y el animal (principalmente a través del Logos, en el doble sentido de la razón y del lenguaje, pero también del trabajo y de la cultura) ha marcado la antropología filosófica alemana hasta finales del siglo XX. La lengua alemana no ha desempeñado aquí un papel insignificante, diferenciando por ejemplo entre comer (essen) y devorar (fressen), morir (sterben) o perecer (verenden). A la vez la Europa “civilizada” ha exhibido personas de las colonias como si fueran animales exóticos en las exposiciones internacionales, muchas veces comparando su “primitividad” con una simple animalidad. Hasta en el siglo XX humanos han sido tratados como animales por regímenes bestiales. Nuevas corrientes en las últimas décadas en la filosofía y en otras disciplinas plantean la necesidad de revisar la comprensión que prevalece hasta hora sobre los animales en Occidente. En este sentido invita polylog. Revista de Filosofía Intercultural a entender una filosofía de la animalidad y de la relación humano y animal a partir de un contexto intercultural. Posibles temas y preguntas pueden estar relacionadas con: El estatuto de los animales en las religiones no cristianas; Tótem y Divinidad de los animales; híbridos mitológicos entre animales y humanos. - ¿Hay sujetos animales?, ¿Cuáles conceptos provenientes de culturas no occidentales se prestan para entender mejor a los animales, sin tener que recurrir a los conceptos sesgados por el humanismo antropocéntrico de sujeto, mente, razón, espíritu, libertad e interioridad? ¿Qué ventajas epistemológicas tienen estos conceptos para conseguir acceder a la vida interior de los animales? - Agency de los animales y comparaciones entre humano y animal en la filosofía social y política. Animales como metáforas de grupos humanos marginalizados y segregados. ¿Mujeres, esclavos y primitivos como „simple animales“? Y al contrario: ¿Es la vida animal una „vida pura“? - Animal Liberation y postcolonialismo, ecocriticismo postcolonial. - Reflexiones culturales-críticas y mediáticas-filosóficas sobre la variación de la comprensión de los animales entre máquinas y su antropomórfico Disneylandico. - Teorías éticas patológicas y biocéntricas en culturas y filosofías no occidentales. ¿Se pueden detectar sentimientos protomorales en el reino animal? ¿Los animales mueren o simplemente “perecen” (verenden)? - Comunicación y amistad entre especies en tradiciones culturales no occidentales. - Veganismo y espiritualidad en culturas no occidentales. - ¿Son los animales capaces de ser culturalizados, y es posible aplicar el concepto de interculturalidad a la relación entre humanos y animales o a las simbiosis de varias especies animales? ¿Son los zoos y acuarios lugares construidos artificialmente como biotopos "interculturales"? - Relevancia de peculiaridades culturales para la protección de los animales, para la legitimidad de sus derechos y para la estimación de la biodiversidad. - ¿Es el posthumanismo una oportunidad o un peligro para los animales? - ¿La cría de animales como arte? Arte de animales y para los animales. Invitamos a filósofas y filósofos, pero también a científicos de otras disciplinas, a participar en alemán, inglés, francés o español.
