Call for Publications Theme: Parallel and Connecting Subtitle: Contemporary African and Western Philosophy Publication: Edited Volume Deadline: 30.9.2019 __________________________________________________ The long tradition of African philosophy has been largely overlooked and even derided by Western philosophy until relatively recently. But there is still a general lack of interaction between these two philosophical traditions. What this volume seeks to do is both to feature scholarship that directly engages with the intersection or clash of African and Western ideas, but also to put contemporary works from each tradition in parallel with each other. This latter approach aims to highlight ways in which similar topics are differently conceived and addressed in these different philosophical traditions, and to make evident ways in which there are connections there to be explored. It also offers a chance to look at higher-level distinctions between African and Western philosophy — distinctions even in the kinds of questions that are seen as philosophically interesting, worthwhile, and important enough to pursue. The starting point for this volume is the Contemporary Language, Logic, and Metaphysics: African & Western Approaches Conference, which took place at the University of Witwatersrand in August 2017. As well as selected papers developed from those presented at the conference, we want to broaden the volume to include other contemporary scholarship in these three primary areas — Language, Logic, and Metaphysics. Interested contributors should submit an abstract, of no more than 300 words, to [email protected]. Final chapters should ideally be between 5,000 and 7,000 words, but no more than 10,000 words at the maximum. If you intend to submit an already published manuscript or a revised version of one, please obtain permission to reprint from the initial publisher(s).
