The Graduate History Association of the Department of History at The
University of Alabama previously announced its hosting of the Twelfth
Annual Graduate Student Conference on Power and Struggle. Due to the
current environment of uncertainty surrounding public health and
safety concerns this coming Fall Semester, the executive committee
has decided to transition from an in-person conference to a paper
contest this year. With this, we are extending the submission
deadline to Tuesday June 23rd, in hopes to reach and engage with more
scholars during this period of academic instability.

The theme of the contest remains the same and can be found below.
Given the current social and scholarly climate, we have chosen to
expand our number of offered paper awards from two to four. Awards
will consider the Best Paper Submission Overall, Best Paper in
Southern History, Best Paper of a member of Phi Alpha Theta, and the
final one will also consider written elements such as the use of
narrative, style of the work, use of materials, and language. Awards
will be announced over the course of the original conference dates,
Friday October 9th and Saturday October 10th, 2020.

The contest’s theme addresses new approaches of historical analysis
that focus on the relationship between struggle and power, especially
people who struggled to break, transform, or reclaim the boundaries
constructed by those in power. We encourage graduate students to
submit papers that examine these relationships across various
temporal, geographical, and topical fields and disciplines. The
contest seeks submissions employing theoretical approaches,
interdisciplinary methods, comparative perspectives, and
multi-archival research bases that push the bounds of historical
interpretation.

The GHA Conference Committee seeks submissions concerning, but not
limited to, the following topics:

- Power in institutions, society, and religion
- Struggle in cultural expression, social relationships, and belief
  systems
- Power in discourse on gender, race, and class
- Struggle against labels in nationalism, ethnicity, or sexual
  identity
- Power in traditional structures such as politics, diplomacy,
  imperialism, and war
- Struggle in resistance such as crime, protest, liberation, and
  revolution

Papers submissions should range from 12 to 25 double-spaced pages in
length, include a full title, and a one-page CV of the submitter. All
submissions should be sent in PDF or Word format via email to
[email protected]. Incomplete applications will not be
accepted.
