Call for Papers Theme: The Political Dimension of Nature Subtitle: An Intercultural Critique Type: Annual Conference Institution: Society for Intercultural Philosophy University of Tübingen Location: Tübingen (Germany) Date: 4.–6.6.2021 Deadline: 15.3.2021 __________________________________________________ (Deutsche Version unten) The serious impacts of climate change have urgently put the notion of human interaction with nature on the political agenda. This reflects the realization that humans are in the process of destroying their own livelihoods. While politics, however, is primarily concerned with obstructing the destruction, current European philosophy of nature, amongst other lines of endeavor following on from German Idealism, seeks to trace back the notion of reason in nature. Meanwhile, in the area of environmental and animal ethics, thought is being given to a fundamentally different approach to the engagement with nature. In addition, particularly in the field of sociology of knowledge, attention has recently been drawn to the profound shock of the current climate crisis on the understanding of human's self-image in modern times. What the various answers to this shock have in common is that they want to re- assess the relationship between people and their environment, things, nature and technology. Such a re-measurement goes beyond political action as it is evident, that in the history of European-Occidental philosophy the sphere of the political itself from ancient times has been understood as distinct from nature. The Aristotelian understanding of man as a zoon politikon is based on the fact that man is capable of legislating himself his own laws while the scope of such autonomy cannot reach the heteronomously determined laws of nature. This approach can still be found in the 20th century, for example, in Hannah Arendt’ political philosophy. Therefore, the demand for the re-measurement of the relationship between man and nature is not only a question of political action, rather above all it is a question of ‘the Political’ in contrast to ‘the Natural’. Precisely for this reason, merely ascribing an agency of its own to nature and things, will still fall short as it only increases the circle of those who participate in the sphere of political action. The inquiry about ‘the Political’ and ‘the Natural’ goes deeper and concerns philosophical thinking in the European-Occidental tradition in its foundations. This is where the intercultural criticism has to commence the current struggle as call for renewal of the understanding of nature with respect to the thinking of non-European cultures and epochs. In recent years, corresponding works have been created primarily with respect to Buddhism and in recognition of the Latin American experience. The conference would like to build on this work, but also invites the contributions of other natural experiences of other philosophical traditions. Moreover, the importance of an intercultural experience of nature will be explored. If it is the case that the relationship between human beings and nature presents itself differently in the various approaches, then this plurality is more than just a matter of different conceptualizations of nature; then the human reality as a whole is affected and thus the question of the relation of the different approaches to each other will be emerged. Responding to such inquiries directly concerns the political dimension of nature. Darin spiegelt sich die Einsicht wider, dass der Mensch dabei ist, seine eigenen Lebensgrundlagen zu zerstören. Während die Politik allerdings vorrangig darum bemüht ist, die Zerstörung aufzuhalten, sucht die gegenwärtige europäische Naturphilosophie, unter anderem im Anschluss an den Deutschen Idealismus, die Vernunft in der Natur aufzuspüren und wird im Bereich der Umwelt- und Tierethik über einen grundlegend anderen Umgang mit der Natur nachgedacht. Zudem ist zuletzt vor allem in der Wissenssoziologie auf die tiefere Erschütterung aufmerksam gemacht worden, die die aktuelle Klimakrise für das Selbstverständnis des Menschen in der Moderne bedeutet. Gemeinsam ist den verschiedenen Antworten auf diese Erschütterung, dass sie das Verhältnis zwischen dem Menschen und seiner Umwelt, den Dingen, der Natur und der Technik neu vermessen möchten. Eine solche Neuvermessung geht über politisches Handeln hinaus, ist die Sphäre des Politischen in der Geschichte europäisch-abendländischer Philosophie selbst doch von alters her in Unterscheidung zur Natur verstanden worden. Das aristotelische Verständnis des Menschen als eines zoon politikon gründet darin, dass sich der Mensch seine Gesetze selbst zu geben vermag und sich der Handlungsraum solcher Autonomie gegen die heteronom bestimmte Natur absetzt. Noch im 20. Jahrhundert findet sich diese Figur beispielsweise in der politischen Philosophie Hannah Arendts wieder. Die Forderung nach einer Neuvermessung des Verhältnisses von Mensch und Natur ist deshalb nicht allein eine Frage politischen Handelns, sondern vor allem auch eine Frage nach dem Politischen im Unterschied zum Natürlichen. Gerade deshalb aber könnte der Versuch, der Natur und den Dingen eine eigene agency zuzuschreiben, zu kurz greifen, wird damit doch lediglich der Kreis jener vergrößert, die an der Sphäre politischen Handelns teilhaben. Die Frage nach dem Politischen und dem Natürlichen reicht tiefer und betrifft das philosophische Denken in der europäisch-abendländischen Tradition in seinen Grundfesten. Hier muss die interkulturelle Kritik ansetzen und das aktuelle Ringen um eine Erneuerung des Naturverständnisses mit dem Denken außer-europäischer Kulturen und Epochen konfrontieren. In den letzten Jahren sind entsprechende Arbeiten vor allem in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Buddhismus und in der Aufnahme lateinamerikanischer Erfahrungswirklichkeiten entstanden. Die Tagung möchte an diese Arbeiten anknüpfen, aber auch weitere Naturerfahrungen anderer Philosophietraditionen zu Wort kommen lassen. Darüber hinaus soll grundsätzlich nach der Bedeutung einer interkulturellen Erfahrung von Natur gefragt werden. Wenn sich das Verhältnis von Mensch und Natur in den verschiedenen Ansätzen unterschiedlich darstellt, dann handelt es sich um mehr als nur verschiedene Konzeptualisierungen von Natur. Dann ist die menschliche Wirklichkeit im Ganzen betroffen und es stellt sich deshalb auch die Frage nach dem Verhältnis der verschiedenen Ansätze zueinander. Die Antwort auf diese Frage betrifft die politische Dimension der Natur unmittelbar. Wir laden Vorträge zu folgenden sechs Sektionen ein: - Natur in außer-europäischen Philosophietraditionen - Dekoloniale Perspektiven auf Natur - Politik der Natur - Religion und Natur - Phänomenologie der Natur - Gender und Natur: Positionen aus der feministischen Philosophie Abstracts in einer Länge von max. 500 Wörtern werden bis zum 15.
