Institution: School of Humanities, University of Glasgow
Location: Glasgow, Scotland (United Kingdom)
Deadline: 20.6.2021

The University of Glasgow is seeking to appoint a lecturer in
political philosophy. This is a permanent research and teaching
position, roughly equivalent to assistant professor in North America.

The successful candidate will be a team-player with a developing
research profile in political philosophy and capable of making a
strong contribution to teaching and supervision at all levels. We
have a particular interest in candidates whose research addresses
global challenges, including racial and social justice, human rights,
and climate change.

In addition, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to
teach on a new interdisciplinary MSc in Global Human Rights, and to
collaborate with the Scottish Council on Global Affairs, a new
multi-institutional body hosted by the University of Glasgow in
2021-23.

Philosophy has an illustrious history at Glasgow, where it has been
taught since 1451 by such luminaries as Frances Hutcheson, Thomas
Reid, and Adam Smith. With this appointment, our friendly and vibrant
community will include 20 permanent staff as well as postdocs,
visiting researchers, and our numerous students. Our student
programmes cover all levels, including popular pre-honours courses,
two large honours years, three separate MScs, and a successful
doctoral programme. Our research and teaching cover the full breadth
of the discipline.

The University offers excellent support for research and public
engagement activity, and it allocates time for lecturers to complete
a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Practice. Glasgow’s
Early Career Development Programme provides one-to-one mentoring to
help staff achieve timely promotion.

The University aims to foster an inclusive climate and to ensure
equality in our working, research, and learning and teaching
environments. We strongly welcome applications from members of
under-represented groups, including BAME colleagues and women. We
endorse the principles of Athena SWAN, including a supportive and
flexible working environment, with commitment from all levels of the
organisation to promoting gender equality.

Start date:
1 September 2021 – 1 September 2022, subject to negotiation.
