Conference Announcement Theme: Public Space, Inclusion, and Postcolonial Theory Type: 2nd Junior Researcher Workshop Institution: Institute of Philosophy, KU Leuven Location: Leuven (Belgium) – Online Date: 13.10.2021 __________________________________________________ The concept of ‘the public’ either implicitly or explicitly influences many political concepts, such as citizenship, democratic participation, or societal discourse. The exclusion of specific individuals or groups from the public has long been criticized by postcolonial theorists and anti-colonial activists, who then go on to interrogate the very notion of the public. Such criticisms and interrogations can include questions about who has access to, or control over certain public environments ( e.g. streets, market places and squares) as well as public institutions (e.g. schools, social housing, libraries, parks, etc.). As such, questions of the public are entangled with our relationships to public spaces. Such spaces can, therefore, be seen as foundational to social participation, public discourse and epistemic justice, and to sustain environmental, social, economic and political aspects of human life. This workshop sets out to bring together junior scholars working in various subfields of political philosophy, such as liberal democratic theory, continental political philosophy and queer theory, who critically interrogate key concepts in political theory from a postcolonial perspective. It aims to set up a lasting collaboration between researchers in Flanders, the Netherlands and beyond working on these and related topics. Keynote: Sophie Withaeckx (Maastricht): The other in our midst: On inclusion and identity in postcolonial institutions Presentations: Tamara van den Berg (KU Leuven): (Un)conditional Citizenship Seunghyun Song (KU Leuven): Social sanction as epistemic repair Sophie Lauwers (Aberdeen): Religion, secularity, culture? (Dis)entanglements of Christianity and the Secular in Public Space Mariska Jung (VUB): Connecting feminist, antiracist and animal politics: a bridge too far? This workshop takes place both on campus and online. Registration is open and we welcome all students and researchers to attend.
