What we call Global Laozegetics builds on traditional Laozegetics
(Laoxue), an approach that valorizes the plurality of Laozi
(Daodejing) interpretations. Reflecting this viewpoint, the Daoist
priest Du Daojian (1237-1318) explains the Laozi is not static but
transforms with the times: “Han dynasty commentators produced the Han
Laozi, Jin dynasty commentators produced the Jin Laozi, and Tang and
Song dynasty commentators produced the Tang and Song Laozi.” This
suggests that the history of the Laozi is one of exegesis and
eisegesis, where the commentators continually adapt the work to the
needs of their age. According to this view, the most essential topic
to research is not the “original meaning” of the Laozi but how the
classic has been read, received, and reinterpreted throughout the
ages.Just as traditional Laozegetics focuses on the Laozi seen from
different historical or philosophical viewpoints, Global Laozegetics
incorporates all the Laozi found in different languages, cultures,
and philosophies. It is extremely inclusive and emphasizes the
unified diversity of Laozi interpretations across the globe.

In order to promote the discussion on the diversity of Laozi’s
commentaries and translations among domestic and foreign experts, the
College of Philosophy of Nankai University plans to hold the
International Conference on Global Laozegetics on October 23-24,
2021, inviting renowned experts and scholars from twelve countries to
fully discuss this issue.

The conference will be held in both Chinese and English, with
simultaneous interpreting at the same time, for both
Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese. Anyone interested in
