Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse
city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg,
Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Philosophy in
the Faculty of Arts at Ryerson University invites applications for a
tenure track position with an Area of Specialization in Indigenous
Philosophy, broadly construed, at the rank of Assistant Professor,
effective July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval.

This opportunity is only open to individuals who identify as
Indigenous. Recognizing the underrepresentation of Indigenous
faculty, this opportunity will support the University’s commitment to
the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action and the
University's Standing Strong Task Force Report and Recommendations.

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching,
research and service duties, maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and
collegial work environment across all activities. Responsibilities
will include: pursuing an original and independent research program
that produces high-quality research; engaging in teaching duties (2+2
course load, which is the Department teaching standard) including
teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; supervising
graduate students and contributing to curriculum development as
appropriate; and participating in the academic life of the Department
of Philosophy, the Faculty of Arts, the Indigenous community on
campus, and the University, through service activities.

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in Philosophy or a closely
related field by the appointment date. Candidates who are
all-but-dissertation (ABD) and are able to demonstrate that they are
close to completion will also be considered. In addition, the
successful candidate must present evidence of:

- a strong program of established or emerging scholarly research that
  is active, innovative, and impactful;
- the ability, or potential, to be an excellent teacher and
  successfully supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
- a commitment to our values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as
  it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative
  activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning
  accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
- a strong commitment to Indigenous knowledges and methodologies and
  to developing curriculum that supports Indigenous pedagogies and
  education more generally;
- an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the
  Philosophy Department, Indigenous community on campus, and the
  University through collegial service.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit their application online via the Faculty
Recruitment Portal (click on “Start Application Process” to begin) by
January 1, 2022.

The application must contain submissions in the following order as a
single PDF document:

- a letter of application;
- a letter from a community reference on your work as an Indigenous
  scholar (community can be broadly defined here, i.e., First Nation,
  urban organization, etc.);
- a curriculum vitae;
- a statement of research interests (including plans for
  dissemination of results);
- one recent writing sample (shortlisted candidates might be asked
  for a second); and
- a teaching dossier (including a statement of teaching philosophy,
  sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and evidence of any curriculum
  development experience).

In addition to the community reference, applicants must arrange for
at least two confidential academic letters of reference to be sent to
the Department of Philosophy at [email protected]. Names of
further references may be requested at a later stage in the selection
process.
