Call for Publications Theme: Dynamic Encounters between Buddhism and the West Publication: East Asian Journal of Philosophy (EAJP) Date: Special Issue Deadline: 31.5.2022 (Spring 2023) __________________________________________________ This special issue of EAJP aims to provide a forum for researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss the many ways “Buddhism” is being, can be, and has been, approached in academic settings. Given the insular and specialised nature of contemporary academic departments, the editors of this volume agreed it would be worthwhile to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to the topic Dynamic Encounters between Buddhism and the West. The hope is to begin to broaden intellectual horizons and help situate academic discourse in a wider, cosmopolitan, inclusive context. As such, the present volume aims to bring together research techniques and methodologies employed in distinct fields such as history, literature, music, philosophy, art, anthropology, and religious studies. Contributors will share the overarching theme of “Dynamic Encounters between Buddhism and the West”, though in the very spirit of transcultural encounters, contributions that problematise the rigidity of these categories are welcome. This shared motivation will allow this issue to present a collective, yet diverse, attempt to expose the multi-faceted, multi-layered, and multi-dimensional aspects of this central theme. In so doing, we hope to bring to light the myriad fruitful encounters, both actual and theoretical, enabled by the ever-growing interconnectedness of our globalised world. We invite papers on the following topics: - Ancient encounters with Buddhism - The Christian reception of Buddhism - Historical encounters between Buddhism and Western philosophy - Buddhism and science - Comparative philosophy - Interfaith dialogue - Aesthetic encounters - Postcolonial, Decolonial narratives and re-descriptions Instructions The submission language is English. All submissions will undergo a double-blind review process. See the EAJP webpage for submission instructions and style guidelines. Submissions that do not comply with these instructions will not be taken into consideration. In this EAJP Thematic Issue, all articles must focus on at least one specific theoretical issue and must present it in a way which is accessible to readers unfamiliar with the technical terminology of the specific field. EAJP is looking for original, previously unpublished research articles that contribute to the development of the field, initiate a relevant scholarly debate, or take part in a current discussion.
