Call for Papers Theme: Irish National Identity at Home and Abroad Type: Interdisciplinary Symposium Institution: University College Dublin Location: Dublin (Ireland) Date: 9.–10.5.2022 Deadline: 1.4.2022 __________________________________________________ Papers are invited for an interdisciplinary symposium on Irish National Identity to be held in Dublin (Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th May 2022). This symposium will explore the nature of Irish nationalism and Irish identity as Ireland enters into its second century as an independent nation. It will provide a forum to facilitate discussions on the evolving shape of nationalism in Ireland post-Brexit; senses of national identity in light of developing independent relations with Europe; and the impact of immigration and emigration in the development of hybrid national identities. The aim is to bring together researchers from across the social sciences to share diverse perspectives on both nationalism and ‘Irishness’. By transcending disciplinary boundaries, not only will new light be shed on existing research, but new areas of research will also be found in the overlaps and spaces between various disciplinary standpoints. The symposium will address questions including: What are and have been the philosophical/sociological/historical underpinnings of nationalism, and how have they been mobilised in relation to Irishness? What is Irish nationalism in the 21st century? How has Irish nationalism been impacted by both immigration to Ireland and by the changing nature of emigration from Ireland? How well does Ireland live up to its claim to be the home of céad mile fáilte, given its poor human rights record in direct provision centres? What are the differences in Irish nationalism expression at home and by Irish migrant communities abroad? What does the border with Northern Ireland mean for Irish nationalism post-Brexit? How does one become ‘Irish’? Is modern Ireland defined by leaving behind Irish nationalism towards a cosmopolitan sense of self or can we speak of something like an Irish internationalism? Through these and related conversations we aim to build an interdisciplinary network of researchers interested in the multifaceted nature of nationalism in an Irish context. We welcome proposals on any topic related to Irish nationalism and Irish identity, we are particularly interested in proposals that take an imaginative approach to the conference theme.
