If you are doing a backup using a O/S utility (tar, etc), then yes, you need
to do cstop first.  You can use the Cache Backup utility to do a backup of
the Cache databases without shutting down the system, but it will only
backup the Cache databases, not the rest of the environment.  If you can
afford the downtime, then the cstop with the O/S backup is my preference.
If not, then I prefer to use shadowing, and do the backup on the shadow.
