- shmmax - Maximum size of system V shared memory segment that can be created.
- shmall - Maximum total shared memory system-wide. Units should be in KB.
So what happens is if the segment size to be created is very big, it has to be paged, i.e. as you say, reside in Virtual memory.

I have a question: I notice you have SHMMAX cranked up higher than SHMALL - am I correct in understanding that this allows virtual memory to be treated as shared memory, or is there another reason?
