Greetings,

It is my pleasure to announce the availability of EPIC 0.1.0 on The ZCacheLib Project's Web site. EPIC stands for "an Eclipse Plug-In for Cach" and it contributes Cach development features to the open-source Eclipse platform, effectively turning it into a cross-platform development environment for Cach.

A whole subsection of the site has been created for EPIC and you can check it out at http://www.zcachelib.org/epic. You will find a feature list (see below), a broad road map, screenshots, installation instructions and downloads there.

As you may infer from the version number, this release offers very limited functionality: you can create, edit, compile and delete routines (either MAC, INT, INC or BAS) using a "Notepad-level" editor over a hard-coded connection to a local Cach install. However, it is my intention with this release to provide early adopters an initial setup where they can become familiar with Eclipse and EPIC.

The entire source code is available for download as well - many things are bound to change between this release and the next and I would strongly encourage contributors to send me an email before making modifications, just so we can talk about future developments and I can consider their ideas as development moves on. I am open to all sorts of suggestions, enhancements and comments, because even though I am looking forward to use EPIC myself and thus suit it to my taste, I would also like that as many people as possible use it and find themselves comfortable doing so.

To this extent, in order to gather feedback not only from potential contributors but from users, I have enabled the new wish category "ZCL - EPIC", so that we can all democratically steer the direction of the project via the site's Wish List feature. There are some annoyances with the wish UI regarding the introduction of this category (you'll still have to specify a Cach version and could in theory address your wish to someone other than the community), but hopefully I'll iron them out sometime soon.

On a final note, a big thank you goes to each and everyone of you who has made possible this project by encouraging and supporting the idea, and by providing lots of food for thought through your discussions on the newsgroup, especially about Studio. I would especially like to thank Mathias Khn and Warlin Garca for their insight into the task, and for reviewing the source code and feature set.

I sincerely wish you find this advance of The ZCacheLib Project relevant to your interests regarding the project, and look forward to your comments and suggestions.

Regards,

Ramn
