So long as it can be configured in the cpf for the 
whole system, the effect is the same.
Indeed, that is the best way to handle it now.

That is a mild way to put it.
It is not compatible with some programs written in prior versions of Cache' or 
any standard M implementation anywhere ever.

"Some programs" are those which could have "e" in the data but 
assume that "e" does not have a numeric interpretation.

I can't believe that no one from ISC was around when the MDC debated this 
topic at length.
The $zu() option should have been around from the first version that the 
change was made.
