Israel to compensate Palestinians June 8, 2009 JERUSALEM: Israel will pay compensation to about 50 Palestinian families whose property was damaged when Jewish settlers went on a rampage in the West Bank city of Hebron last December, the army said yesterday. The Defence Ministry said it would pay a total of 250,000 shekels ($79,000) to the families, who had filed complaints with the Israeli administration in the West Bank. The families were the victims of what the then prime minister, Ehud Olmert, called a "pogrom" against local Palestinians. The settlers destroyed olive groves and set at least two houses and more than a dozen cars on fire. At least three Palestinians were wounded by gunfire. Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said he would deliver a policy address this week in the wake of repeated US calls for a freeze in West Bank settlement construction. Mr Netanyahu has said a total halt to settlement construction will be impossible. Agence France-Presse, Associated Press [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
