Bunker skull not Adolf Hitler's

LONDON: DNA tests have shown that a fragment of bone believed to have been from
the skull of Adolf Hitler was from a woman, reports said yesterday.

The find, made by US archeologist Nick Bellantoni, who tested the fragment that
had been held at the Russian State Archive in Moscow, casts doubt on the
supposed suicide death of the Fuhrer in his Berlin bunker in 1945, UK newspaper
The Sun said yesterday.

For decades, it was thought Hitler had taken a cyanide pill and shot himself in
the head as the Russian army closed in on Berlin. His body was later dug up
from near the destroyed bunker and the KGB in 1970 burnt the remains, apart
from a jawbone and the skull fragment.

Dr Bellantoni, who was given access to the piece of bone for just an hour, says
that not only did it come from a woman, but it was also from someone much
younger than Hitler, who was 56 when he died.

He said: "The bone seemed very thin - male bone tends to be more robust. It
corresponds to a woman between the ages of 20 and 40," The Sun reported.

"The sutures where the skull plates come together seemed to correspond to
someone under 40," The Guardian quoted Dr Bellantoni as saying.

Hitler's bride Eva Braun, who also took cyanide, was 33. But Dr Bellantoni
said: "There is no report of her having shot herself or having been shot
afterwards. It could be anyone's."

DNA analyses performed on the bone have been processed at the genetics lab of
the University of Connecticut. The results, broadcast in the US by a History
Channel documentary, Hitler's Escape, astonished scientists.
