Bombers filmed jogging near hotel

JAKARTA: The bombers who blew themselves up at Jakarta's JW Marriott and
Ritz-Carlton hotels were filmed jogging around the luxury hotels and mugging
for the cameras as they shopped for their suicide garb in the weeks before the
blasts.

The chilling videos also reveal the recruiter of the bombers, Saifuddin
Jaelani, inciting them to undertake their murderous acts by chanting
''Destruction to America. Destruction to Australia. Destruction to Indonesia.''

Seven people died in the co-ordinated attacks on the Jakarta hotels, including
three Australians. More than 50 people were injured.

Police released excerpts from five different videos yesterday, all taken from
the laptop computer found on the body of the slain terrorist mastermind Noordin
Mohammed Top earlier this month.

Dani Dwi Permana, 18, and Nana Ikhwan Maulana, 28, feature in the videos, which
police said were filmed by the man who recruited them, Jaelani, a
Yemeni-trained Islamic preacher and purveyor of Islamic medicines.

Two of the videos show Dani and Nana exercising in front of the hotels they
were later to check into and bomb. The two men are wearing sports gear and go
through a variety of stretching exercises while Jaelani urges them on.

A third video shows the two bombers sitting on grass in front of the hotel,
eating oranges and biscuits.

The younger one, Dani, says: ''I do not want to commit suicide. This is an
order. This is an obligation of our people. The ones who commit suicide are
desperate. I am not desperate.''

Nana then speaks to the camera before Jaelani shouts: ''Destruction to America.
Destruction to Australia. Destruction to Indonesia.''

As well as the three Australians who died in the attacks on July 17, a New
Zealander, a Dutch couple and an Indonesian waiter died in the blasts.

There is strong evidence that the bomber at the JW Marriott, Dani, deliberately
targeted a regular breakfast meeting of local and expatriate business people
hosted by the American-born business consultant and Indonesia advocate, Jim
Castle.

Another video shows the two bombers shopping for designer clothing in Jakarta.

Nana turns to the camera and shows off a long-sleeved business shirt identical
to the one he wore in the attack. Both bombers wore expensive clothing to blend
in with the guests at the five-star hotels.

The fifth video shows the bombers at a safe house sitting on the floor and
talking.

Police also released the contents of a letter they said was written by Jaelani
to his family boasting of the sophistication of the terrorist network. It is
not clear whether it was ever sent.

The cell was highly ''structured'', he said in the letter dated July 29, 12
days after the bombings took place.

It included different personnel in charge of funding, recruitment, spiritual
guidance, welfare officers for jihadi families, and others who were assigned
such tasks as securing explosives, looking after transport, making videos and
acting as couriers and messengers.

Police believe Jaelani, who remains at large, is likely to take over control of
Noordin's cell.

Other laptops and documents were found during the siege that killed Noordin and
three associates. Police also found explosives, an M16 assault rifle and a
Beretta handgun, said to be the personal weapon of the terrorist leader.

Police did not reveal contents of the laptop that are deemed to be highly
sensitive to continuing investigations.
