"The perpetrators installed a device with a card slot in the ATM. Users will not realize that the slot is a fake, and whenever they swipe their card in this slot the device will automatically copy and capture the card's data," chief of detectives Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi said. The thieves also installed a mini camera to record customers' PINs as they punched them in. With the card data, they cloned ATM cards and used them to withdraw funds from bank customers' accounts. "So far this has only happened in ATMs at banks in Bali. There is also a Jakarta resident who reported Rp 70 million [$7,560] was stolen from his account because he went to Seminyak and used an ATM there," Ito said. "We will work fast to restore public trust in our bank system. We suspect that the perpetrators are still in Bali." Ito added that so far there was no evidence of bank insiders being involved. Bank Indonesia has compiled a list of 200 bank clients whose accounts were tapped for a total loss of Rp 2 billion, said Jeffrey Kairupan, director of the central bank's Denpasar branch. Jeffrey said customers at PT Bank Central Asia, PT Bank Negara Indonesia, PT Bank Mandiri, PT Bank Permata, PT Bank Internasional Indonesia and PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia had reported thefts. "Most of them were BCA clients - 55 cases in all," he said. Bali Police Chief Sr. Comr. Gede Alit Widana said capture devices had been seized from ATMs in Denpasar and Kuta. He said the method suggested the thieves were part of a syndicate. Potential links to known criminal groups in Australia, Russia and Canada were being investigated. Jeffrey asked the public not to panic because the banks had taken steps to deal with the thefts. "We will give full assistance until the problem is solved," he said.
