Two killed in clash in eastern Philippines A communist rebel and a government militiaman were killed in a clash in the eastern Philippines, a regional army spokesman said yesterday. The fighting erupted Friday when about 10 guerrillas attacked a soldier and two government militiamen aboard a motorcycle in Donsol town in Sorsogon province, 360km south-east of Manila, according to Major Harold Cabunoc. Cabunoc said army Sergeant Montano Escano and another militiaman were also wounded in the firefight but were able to repulse the rebels. The fleeing rebels left behind an assault rifle, a hand grenade and a rifle grenade. Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
