Bomb Squad Arrive at Church in Medan
March 19, 2011

Medan, North Sumatra. The North Sumatra Police's bomb squad was deployed to a
church in Medan on Saturday, shortly after the church received a bomb threat.

The squad arrived at the church at about 1 p.m. local time to search for any
suspicious packages.

Indonesia remains on edge after a series of bomb threats have rocked parts of
the country this week.

A Bank Central Asia (BCA) building at Serpong Road, Banten Province, also
received a bomb threat on Friday.

On Tuesday, four packages containing books with bombs planted in them were sent
to Ulil Abshar Abdalla, activist of the Islam Liberal Network, Goris Mere, the
chief of the National Anti-Narcotics Agency, Yapto Soeryosumarno, the chief of
the Pancasila Youth organization, and Ahmad Dhani, a musician.

The first bomb, intended for Ulil, was accidentally detonated by a police
officer in Utan Kayu, East Jakarta, causing him to lose his hand and injuring
two others.

A plastic bag containing a bomb was also found in Cibubur, Bogor district, on
Friday.

In response to these bomb threats, House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki
Alie urged the police to immediately unveil the perpetrators of the recent
parcel bomb scare so that it would not turn into a political issue.

"I suspect that the bomb terror is being carried out by a network rather than
individuals judging by the targets," he said.
