Havana. February 24, 2012 Esteban Lazo meets with religious leaders Dalia González Delgado COUNCIL of State Vice President Esteban Lazo Hernández met on February 22 with a group of leaders and representatives of different Cuban religious denominations and fraternal associations. The meeting, convened annually, reflects the unity between the Cuban government and religious institutions and associations. Leaders of the Protestant, Evangelical, Russian and Greek Orthodox churches; Buddhists, Muslims, representatives of religions of African origin, spiritualist centers, the Hebrew community and fraternal associations all participated. Lazo reflected that the world is experiencing an economic and structural crisis and one of energy and food; a world in which there are more poor every day and wealth is concentrated in the hands of fewer and fewer people. For that reason he emphasized the importance of respect and working together on issues which unite the people. In this context, Caridad Diego, head of the Central Committee’s Office of Religious Affairs, affirmed that the formation and restoration of values is of interest to everyone. Many religious institutions have projects underway in their communities, and make donations to senior citizens’ homes and those for orphaned children, she stated. "It is good that our unity is publicly known," Lazo emphasized. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
